When the official Christmas photos of the wee royal posing in a super cute sweater were released over the weekend, it set off a buying frenzy.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge chose to dress their little prince in an adorable navy blue and sleeveless Guards Tank Top, featuring marching guardsmen complete with bearskins and red tunics.

And just hours after the palace released the snaps of the young heir to the British throne, high-end street retailer Cath Kidston was inundated with requests from those wanting to get their hands on the festive jumper, which usually retails for about $53.

Unfortunately though, the vintage-style item had already sold out, but may go on sale again.

“We sold it but it sold out a while ago, why not check out our new kids tank,” the retailer tweeted.

A spokesperson for the brand later re-tweeted the possibility of the knitted top being re-stocked.

“Given the huge demand we’re looking into getting more.

“We’ll be speaking to our team tomorrow to see what’s possible so we’ll be able to update you next week #fingerscrossed.

“We’re so proud to see our favourite little soldier in his London Guards tank top. Merry Christmas Prince George!

In the photo, the chubby-cheeked 16-month-old, who was crowned most stylish royal earlier this year, is seen smiling and giggling in a courtyard at his home in Kensington Palace.

His cute outfit was topped off with a white cotton shirt from Polarn O. Pyret and a pair of black Start-Rite Jo First Walking Shoes.

So could this be the start of the George effect?

Well, it turns out the little trendsetter already has a website dedicated to his outfits called What Prince George Wore, which is the sister to What Kate Wore, a blog which follows the style of the Duchess.
