The red carpet arrivals have begun at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, Los Angeles as showbiz’s elite gather for the 88th Academy Awards.

Of course, all eyes will be on long-running Oscar nominee Leonardo DiCaprio as he gears up for another nail-biting awards ceremony.

Leo, who has been nominated for five Oscars in total, has been given a nomination for Best Actor in a Leading Role thanks to his gritty performance in The Revenant.

There’s some stiff competition in his category as he goes face-to-face with Eddie Redmayne for The Danish Girl, Michael Fassbender for Steve Jobs, Bryan Cranston in Trumbo and Matt Damon for his role in The Martian.

And it’s just as tough in the Best Actress category.

Jennifer Lawrence’s performance in Joy has scored a nomination, while Aussie starlet Cate Blanchett’s role in Carol has landed a nod, Room star Brie Larson is one of the hot favourites, Charlotte Rampling for 45 Years is another front-runner and Saoirse Ronan’s stirring performance in Brooklyn has also been getting a lot of buzz.

Locally, director George Miller’s critically acclaimed Mad Max: Fury Road has cleaned up with an incredible ten nominations, including Best Picture and Director.

“It’s not your typical Academy Award movie. We didn’t expect to be here so that just makes it a lot of fun,” the 70-year-old director explained.

The musical entertainment will also be another highlight with the likes of Lady Gaga, Sam Smith and The Weeknd all set to dazzle on stage.

Best Actress nominee Brie Larson cut a flirty figure in a frilly royal blue frock.
