How to fake a tan

Before hitting the beach, fake that golden glow.

  1. Do a patch test on your upper thigh or arm to be sure you don’t have an allergic reaction to the fake tan before you use it all over your body.

  2. Apply the fake tan as you would a body lotion, but don’t overlap your applications, as these areas will come out darker. Blend all the edges, and use a mirror to check your back, buttocks and the back of your legs.

  3. Wait the suggested time for your tan to develop, then shower and wash using a mild body gel. Slather your skin with body lotion daily, as moisturising helps your tan last longer.

  4. If your fake tan has patches or streaks, use cotton wool soaked in toner and gently rub over the areas to lighten them. Alternatively, exfoliate your soles, elbows or knees to take off the deeper colour. You could also apply whitening toothpaste over the blotchy areas, then wash it off after a few minutes.

  5. If you want a little extra colour on your face, use a formula specifically designed for your face, because it’s lighter and won’t clog your pores.

  6. If you’re after immediate colour, use an instant tanner or bronzer. This type of tanner has tinted pigments and coloured shimmers that give an instant summery glow, but it does tend to wash off.

  7. Spray tanners are the easiest to apply and the least messy. Just spritz evenly all over your body and wait until it is completely dry before getting dressed.

  8. Once you’ve applied your fake tan, wash your hands well in soapy water and rub them with fresh lemon to remove any stains.

  9. For a lasting all-over glow or to boost your existing skin tone, apply a tan enhancer or bronzer.
