From shrimp on the barbie to Hollywood’s biggest party: All the Aussies who’ve stunned on the Oscars red carpet over the years

Let’s cast our minds back to 1994. Our tape players were blasting Boys II Men, our video cassette players were a jumble of taped Friends episodes and the last quarter of Friday’s rugby league match … and Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman were still together, utterly smitten with each other. Their glamorous Oscar’s appearance that very year was case in point. The Aussie stunner’s black Valentino gown, elevated by her incredible red 90s-esque curls, remains iconic to this day.

Fast-forward six years later and Nicole was only just getting started. The famed Aussie actress turned heads left, right and centre thanks to her epic performances and even better fashion displays. This John Galliano for Dior gown was heaven on earth.

And she continued to provide the fashion goods. In 2002, Nicole’s stunning pink tiered Chanel dress was a was timeless wonder.

Of course, Nicole’s not the only Aussie stunner to turn heads at the Oscars. In 2004, Naomi Watts literally glimmered in this heavenly Versace dress.

And she brought along a much loved Aussie in her entourage. The late Heath Ledger was in his movie hey-day at the time, and opted for a slick pair of sunnies to round out his tux.

In 2006, the Australian legend hit the red carpet again with his then-partner Michelle Willaims. The American actress’s beautiful yellow Vera Wang gown captured everyone’s attention in the very best way.

In 2007, funny guy Sacha Baron Cohen attended the event alongside our fellow Aussie Isla Fisher, who stunned in a mossy green Monique Lhuillier dress.

That same year, Naomi and Nicole put on a joint show for the ages – Nicole’s Balenciaga dress will go down as one of her best of all time, while Naomi’s buttercup yellow Escada frock gave us all the 60s-chic vibes.

Seriously though, how good was this gown? Iconic.

Former Sydneysider Rose Byrne rocked up to the 2012 Oscars in an eye-catching Vivienne Westwood design. She let those sequins do all the talking.

Couple’s that match together … Hugh Jackman and wife Deborra-Lee Furness were the real deal in Tom Ford as they attended the 2013 Oscars.

And our favourite Byron Bay locals Chris Hemsworth and Elsa Pataky were couple #goals at the 2014 event. The Spaniard opted for a glorious bump-flaunting Elie Saab gown.

Back to our gal Nicole! The red-headed beauty was the ultimate golden siren in this Louis Vuitton number.

Naomi’s 2016 gown by Armani Privé is our favourite on the Aussie legend to date – obsessed.

And then came Margot. The down-to-earth Queenslander opted for a golden Tom Ford design that left us spellbound in 2016.

And who could forget that Nicole and Keith moment from 2017? The now-blonde actress showed her affectionate side – and gave us a great opportunity to get a close up look at those gorgeous Harry Winston drop earrings.

In 2018, golden girl Margot was all smiles as she politely slayed the red carpet. Coveting this off-shoulder Chanel number.

And how could we ever forget Cate Blanchett? Her 2018 Oscars look was nothing short of legendary – long live this Armani Privé dream.

At the 92nd Annual Academy Awards in 2020, golden girl Margot Robbie was the ultimate screen siren.

Stunning in silver: The year after in 2021, she shimmered on the carpet in Chanel.

Though they weren’t at the actual event, Isla Fisher looked radiant as she and husband Sacha Baron Cohen virtually attended from Sydney in 2021.

It may not have been everyone’s favourite look but Nicole Kidman, dressed in Armani Privé, and Keith Urban shone in 2022 when Nicole was nominated for her role as Lucille Ball in Being The Ricardos.

Euphoria star Jacob Elordi has taken Hollywood by storm and he looked dapper as ever at the 2022 event.
