By now we’re well aware that when it comes to social media, advice on health and fitness should be taken with the proverbial grain of salt.

However Rebecca Gawthorne isn’t your typical influencer. Despite having an Instagram following of more than 159K (you’ll know her by her handle, @nourish_naturally) and serving up daily #fitspo with her recipe and workout posts, Gawthorne’s influence is relatively legit: she’s a qualified dietitian and nutritionist. Growing her platform organically, Gawthorne says her role as an influencer started as a passion project.

“It started as a place where my dietetic clients could get recipes, extra health tips and inspiration,” she says. “Then some bigger accounts like Kayla Itsines started re-gramming my content (thank you Kayla!) and it kept growing from there.”

We spent a day hanging out with Gawthorne and got to experience her diet and fitness regime firsthand. (HINT: It’s impressive!)

When did you first get into nutrition and what do you love about it?

I first started becoming interested in nutrition when I studied food tech at school. I studied a Bachelor of Nutrition and Dietetics at University; a four-year degree that involves a lot of chemistry and physiology. I received First Class Honours for my research conducted at the Sydney Children’s Hospital.

I’ve worked at various hospitals, health clinics and community nutrition centres across Sydney, as well as throughout rural NSW with The Royal Flying Doctor Service as “The Flying Dietitian”.

I love how much of a difference healthy eating can make to our lives. Food physically becomes you! It makes up every cell in your body — your muscles, hair, skin, heart.

What does a typical day look like for you?

I wake up around 5:30am, have a coffee with my husband and then head for my workout which will vary from a run at the beach to a HIIT session at F45 or some weights.

I then come home, have breakfast and get into my work for the day. I work on my Instagram, blog and YouTube channel, creating health content and recipes. My day can be anything from writing health articles and taking photos to meetings and cooking up new recipes.

What do you usually eat in a day?

My diet is based on natural, healthy, real foods. I eat intuitively, which means what I eat day to day can differ, and I don’t count calories or macros. I don’t have any “rules” when it comes to eating but I try to eat foods that are currently in season.

Before my morning workout:

Water and coffee

Post-workout breakfast:

Cooked veggies with salmon/ocean trout/tuna with a piece of fruit, or a fruit smoothie made with mango/banana, soy milk, seeds (e.g. chia, flax) and oats/muesli/wholegrain cereal. I’ll also drink water.

Lunch and dinner:

Salad and cooked veggies with protein (fish, tofu, beans or lentils) with a carb source (sweet potato, brown rice, quinoa, pasta).

Snacks:

Fresh fruit, baked veggies, fresh cold-pressed juice, soy/coconut yoghurt, nuts/seeds, baked beans, tuna, my banana cake or nice cream.

What do you love about summer?

Everything! I literally live for summer! The warm air, the sun on my skin, the salt breeze, the beach, summer fruits! Everything is just better in summer.

What are you summer beauty go-tos?

I’ll always protect my skin from the sun. I love the Hawaiian Tropic Silk Hydration Sunscreen Lotion with SPF 50+.

What are your favourite summer hang-out spots?

For breakfast I love Blackwood Pantry and my go-to juice bar would have to be Mint Organics — they’re both in Cronulla.

What’s your healthy living philosophy?

Eat healthy, move your body and enjoy life.
