Meghan Markle has made a solid name for herself in fashion and beauty’s elite, with the masses flocking to recreate her signature looks ever since she was thrust into the royal spotlight in 2017.

And after a whirlwind two years of working as a senior royal, Markle has now stepped back and commenced a transitional period with her husband Harry, whereby the pair will work towards becoming financially independent.

And because of that, some of the mum-of-one’s closest affiliates now have the opportunity to speak publicly, without any royal constraints.

First up? The man behind her enviable hair – at long last!

Speaking to British Vogue, the famous hairstylist has delved into how he and the Duchess originally hit it off.

Introduced by “mutual acquaintances” while Meghan was searching for a new hairdresser, the well respected George Northwood made a big impression.

“We immediately spoke the same language,” he told the publication.

“I met her in February, around Valentine’s Day 2018. I was a bit worked up beforehand and then, as soon as I met her, she was just like my California girl clients. She said, ‘I’m a Cali girl’, and I just said, ‘One of my favourites then.’ We hit it off.”

“Cali-girl” definitely defines the Duchess’ atheistic.

Famous for her messy-yet-chic hairstyles (a welcome reprieve from the slick strict looks we’re all too familiar with seeing from members of the British Firm), Meghan and George set a new precedent for royal hairstyles.

Perhaps in one of her most iconic moments, the Duchesses messy low bun worn to her wedding reception (with that Stella McCartney dress) was the epitome of effortless style – and George was the man behind it.

“The evening was intimate, for family and friends, a time for Meghan to be herself. By this point, the messy bun had become such a thing and we wanted to do something equally relaxed and effortless,” he said of the moment.

As for how she chooses each hairstyle though is another story.

George told the publication that instead of starting up top, the Duchess prefers to consider her outfit first, then makes a call on her hair from there.

“She was a very modern princess, the sort of princess we can relate to and aspire to, and the hair just fell into that,” he explained.

“The way she approaches things is how an everyday woman would approach things – she has a real sense of style and she wanted to look approachable, even though she was a princess,” he continued.

While Meghan has now moved to Los Angeles with Harry and 11-month-old son Archie, she and George are still keeping in touch.

“It’s a new chapter, obviously we aren’t living in the same country but I still check in all the time. She puts so much thought into everything, she really has your back and supports small businesses,” he said.

And who knows, perhaps one day soon we’ll see that iconic messy bun again in the home of it’s original muse – LA itself.
