She might only be four years of age, but Zara and Mike Tindall’s daughter Lena is getting an early start with rugby, as her father has recently revealed the young royal is playing rugby for their local team.

During an appearance on The One Show, Mike, who played Rugby Union at a professional level, divulged that his four-year-old has joined a local team rugby for under sixes.

But Mike and Zara, who is daughter to Princess Anne and granddaughter to Queen Elizabeth, are raising more than just one future rugby athlete – as it’s previously been revealed that their eldest daughter Mia, eight, plays rugby, and now that her youngest sister is playing, the two are in the same team.

Mia, 6, and Lena, 4, are keen on rugby just like Mike.

Though the girls seem to enjoy the sport that their father represented England playing, Mike admitted that it can be a push to get them on the field saying, “I’ve found with the girls, that battle to still go and get muddy is still a battle. Once they are there, they’re okay.

“They love it when they get there but every rugby parent will know that battle.”

Speaking about his eldest daughter’s skills in the game, Mike added: “It’s funny how much she’s changed over the last, sort of, this year, since they’ve been back.

“[She’s] figuring out how to avoid people because before they’d just all be really bunched in.”

Mike won 75 caps for England between 2000 and 2011.

As Britain is a rugby-mad nation, it’s not to any surprise that other young royals are taking up the national game, with Catherine, Princess of Wales revealing early this year that her youngest son four-year-old Louis is ‘rugby mad’.

Catherine also said at the time that the family loved competing against each other – particularly siblings Prince George, Prince Charlotte and Prince Louis, saying “We’re always slightly competitive with each other. They all love sport and Louis is mad about rugby.

“They are at an age where they just love running around.”

Could rugby be taking over polo as the royals sport of choice…?
