United States President Donald Trump has taken the Danish royal family by “surprise” following an unexpected new announcement.

The President was all set for an official state visit to the royal family’s home country in September, but plans have now changed, it seems.

Trump has officially called off his visit to the country following comments from the Danish Prime Minister, who said his plan to buy Greenland was “absurd”.

“Denmark is a very special country with incredible people, but based on Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen’s comments, that she would have no interest in discussing the purchase of Greenland, I will be postponing our meeting scheduled in two weeks for another time,” the US President wrote on Twitter.

According to a spokesperson for the Danish royal family, the news was rather unexpected.

Spokesperson Lene Balleby told Associated Press that the news had come as “a surprise” to the household.

On the Danish royal’s website, further comment was made about the cancellation.

“In light of the canceled state visit from the US on 2-3 September. Her Majesty the Queen has decided to conduct the previously planned public audience at Christiansborg Castle on Monday, September 2nd,” a statement on the website said.

With this in mind, it seems the royals will still be kept busy – visit or no visit!

President Trump will not be travelling to Denmark as originally planned.

Despite this, Denmark won’t be shy of a US dignitary for long – former president Barack Obama is planning to travel to the European country at the end of September, where he will give a talk in Aalborg.

Trump’s would-be visit comes after a whirlwind trip to Britain in June, where he spent time with the Queen and other members of the House of Windsor.

Trump and his wife Melania attended a state banquet at Buckingham Palace, various lunches and afternoon tea engagements, as well as appearing at a D-Day commemorative event.

Trump recently visited the UK, making a number of public appearances with the Queen.

Despite the cancelled plans, it seems Mary and her family will have plenty of other activities to be getting on with.

At present, the gorgeous young family look to be having the summer of a lifetime, with the royal’s official Instagram page sharing some candid snaps from their break.
