How does one get a monarch to grin? Ask her how she’d feel if one of her racehorses won the Epsom Derby.
Photographer Hugo Rittson-Thomas shot the Queen for new exhibition The Queen’s People, and had trouble getting her to smile.
After dozens of dour shots, he asked her about her horses, and how she would react if one of them won the country’s biggest race – the result was a beaming grin he captured from four different angles.
Rittson-Thomas used mirrors to take the images, which are inspired by Anthony van Dyck’s famous triple portrait of Charles I.
Prince William and the Duchess of Cornwall were also captured in the series.
