Couch surfing Queen! Her Majesty might be looking for a place to crash as Buckingham Palace crumbles

British landmark and home to the oldest surviving monarchy, Buckingham Palace is falling apart and it looks like Queen Elizabeth will have to move out while it gets refurbished.

British paper The Daily Express reported that over $AUD300,000,000 worth of repairs are needed as the Queen’s official residence falls apart.

According to the paper, Her Royal Highness may have to vacate the premise as renovations will take place over the span of 12 months.

A palace source revealed to the newspaper: “One of the options is for the palace to be vacated. As it stands, we don’t have £150million, which is the very top level figure based on a vacant re-servicing. Buckingham Palace is a centre of national life so we are looking at all the options very carefully.”

The backlog of necessary repairs may see the Queen and her 94-year-old husband Prince Philip unable to reside in their home for an entire year.

The Queen and Prince Philip may have to vacate their official home Buckingham Palace.

It’s assumed the couple will take up residence in their favourite home, Windsor Castle, about a 45 minute drive from Buckingham Palace.

Although Her Majesty may not be at a loss for places to crash, it seems the London tourism board have some concerns of their own.

It’s been reported that half of all London visitors make the trip to Buckingham Palace to see the changing of the guard, however with the Queen out of residence, the impressive spectacle won’t be taking place.

There are very real fears that this may have a damaging effect on tourism, which is why palace staff may go ahead with another plan to extend the repairs over a number of years so the Monarch can still live there.

But with over 775 rooms, this is no easy feat. “You have to remember it’s not the Queen’s home. She only lives in nine rooms,” the source added.
