The bets are on for the royal godparents

Prince Harry and Pippa Middleton are the heavily priced favourites to be appointed as two of as many as six godparents to the new royal baby, Prince George.

British betting firm Ladbrokes has Uncle Harry and Aunt Pippa as the top contenders on a list that also includes Kate’s brother James, Olympic dressage gold medallist Laura Tomlinson and football legend David Beckham.

Prince George’s christening is set to take place in October in the music room of Buckingham Palace, the very place William was christened. Wills was baptised with six godparents – three godmothers and three godfathers.

Editor-in-chief of Majesty Magazine, Ingrid Seward, was quick to downplay Becks’ chances, telling People, “There are no hard and fast rules about this but I just know the royal family has never had a celebrity as a godparent.”

She was also quick to warn punters against backing Harry and Pippa, as she believes they will naturally play integral roles in the young Prince’s life, so “there is no real need” to make them godparents.

“Godparents don’t have to be your best friend. Quite often it is quite the opposite, it can be somebody quite random,” Ingrid explains.

Ingrid’s own list of frontrunners includes:

• Zara Tindall

• Sophie Wessex, wife of Wills’ uncle Prince Edward

• William’s best friends Thomas van Straubenzee, James Meade or Hugh Van Custem

• William’s former nanny Tiggy Legge-Bourke

• Pavlos, Crown Prince of Greece, to who’s son William is also godfather
