Thailand’s King Bhumibol Adulyadej, the world’s longest-reigning monarch, has died aged 88.
The royal was much loved and revered by his people and was regarded as a beacon of stability for a nation which has experienced much political turmoil during his 70 years as head of state.
The king is said to have died early on Thursday morning “in a peaceful state” at Siriraj Hospital. The announcement comes after years of poor health.
Thailand’s Prime Minister Prayut Chan-ocha went on TV to say that the nation would go into a year of mourning and flags will fly half-mast and all entertainment functions must be “toned down” for a month.
The late king, who took the throne at age 18, will be succeeded by his 64-year-old son, Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn.
