The Queen has worn black for Prince Philip’s funeral, and there’s a beautiful meaning behind the ensemble for her husband of 73 years.
Attending the funeral alongside her family on Saturday, April 17, The Queen was stoic and resilient as ever – even through the grief.
What was the meaning behind The Queen’s outfit at Prince Philip’s funeral?
The Monarch’s incredible ensemble consisted a black coat dress and a black matching face mask, hemmed with a white trimming.
She also wore a black matching hat, and pearl drop earrings.
Black is the traditional colour of mourning for royals. While the Queen is usually one to dress in bright block colours, her black outfit was a reflection of her grief.
In tribute to her late husband, her Majesty added more special touches to her outfit.
Along with the all-black number, the Queen donned Queen Mary’s Richmond Brooch, according to The Express.
The gorgeous diamond pin is highly sentimental for Her Majesty as she inherited the piece from her grandmother and wore it during her and Philip’s honeymoon and on their 73rd anniversary.
What’s more, while Kate Middleton wore the Queen’s jewellery for the service, Her Majesty also donned a pearl necklace and earrings as she bid farewell to her husband.
This choice may have been a sweet nod to her and Philip’s wedding day, as the Queen donned pearls during the ceremony, as well on the day she and Philip announced their engagement.

The Queen arrived as the royals marched behind the coffin.

Their respective wives, husbands and children were also present, with Prince William and Prince Harry leading the way.

He was just two months shy of his 100th birthday, but there’s no denying Philip’s innings was filled to the brim with love and beautiful, cherished memories that will last for many generations to come.
The Queen’s beautiful tribute outfit is just one reflection of that.
The royals all wore black as a sign of mourning and respect.

When the Queen passes, she will be buried in the King George VI Memorial Chapel, at which point Prince Philip will be moved to lay beside her in their final resting place.
And despite having now said their goodbyes, The Queen will continue to hold Philip’s presence dear. And we’re sure that’ll be known in her outfits.
