The Denmark royals are visiting India in the place of Queen Margarethe II, who has taken a break from her official duties due to having to undergo surgery.

The Taj Mahal was one of their first stops during the tour, with a photo opportunity seeing Princess Mary and Prince Frederik sit on the same bench that Princess Diana made famous in February 1992, when she was photographed sitting on it solo.

When the Princess of Wales sat there in 1992, she cut a lonely and sombre figure. Nine months later, she announced her separation from Prince Charles. They officially divorced in August, 1996.

Crown Princess Mary and Crown Prince Frederik weren’t the first time royals to have ‘recreated’ the Princess Di shot, as royal watchers were delighted when in 2016, the then-Duke and Duchess of Cambridge posed in the same location during their visit to Agra.

The Crown Princess and Crown Prince’s trip to India comes at a precarious time for the Danish royal family as Queen Margarethe had to undergo urgent “major back surgery” just last week.

The 82-year Queen of Denmark, who is Europe’s longest-serving monarch, is now “stable under the circumstances” but has to take on “a longer rehabilitation process”, the royal household said in a statement.

This means all the queen’s official engagements have been postponed, cancelled or will be undertaken by other members of the royal house, including Prince Frederik, 54, and his wife Princess Mary, 51.

Next in line to the throne, Prince Frederik, and his wife Princess Mary, have stepped up to take on more royal duties whilst the Queen is recovering.
