Crown Princess Mary has issued a rare, and deeply personal apology after a “mistake” in upholding current health regulations amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Danish royal has been out and about filling her royal duties, but this week, she came across a circumstance that she wasn’t quite prepared for – and she’s taken it upon herself to explain.
Sharing an image of herself on Instagram wearing a face mask on a plane, the Princess wrote a lengthy caption in Danish.
The statement roughly translates to: “On land, at sea and in the air – we have to get used to wearing face masks. It is important that we all follow the health authorities recommendations together.”
She continued: “Yesterday I was in Grenaa for my first official visit after the summer holidays. At sea and in the air it went fine, but on land it slipped for me and I unfortunately came to shake hands.
“It reminded me how important it is that we help each other live up to the recommendations. Take care of yourself, and take care of each other.”
Princess Mary shared a stark reminder to the Danish Royal Palace’s official Instagram account.

While a large portion of the world went into lockdown five full months ago, the risks of the virus remain as concerning as ever.
For many, seeing cases stagnate, or in some cases decrease could give them a false sense of security, but Mary’s reminder is incredibly important – we mustn’t forget, and we must continue to do the right thing to stop the spread.
Fans were quick to react to Mary’s post, with one writing: “Thanks for showing the way.”
Another also related to Mary’s explanation, saying it was an understandable move, yet still important to be mindful of.
“The handshake was only human and shows that we can all forget the new guidelines, but [it’s] just important that we again remind each other of the importance of taking care when we forget.”
Fans assured Mary that mistakes were human, but checking ones self and being accountable was incredibly important.
