Crown Princess Mary has broken away from tradition, releasing a solo Christmas card to mark the 2020 festive season.
While the Danish Royal Family may still unveil a family snap, the 48-year-old has posed for a stunning new solo portrait.
In the regal image, Tasmanian-born Princess Mary looks every inch the royal leader in a powder-blue blazer, which she accessorised with a simple silver butterfly-shaped brooch, diamond earrings, bouncy tresses and a dramatic bold eye and bright lip.
Princess Mary used the release of the Christmas card, which was shared on the official @detdanskekongehus Instagram page and captured by Stine Heilmann, to reflect on the hardships of 2020.
“As chairman of Her Royal Highness The Crown Princess has today sent a Christmas greeting on the Foundation’s digital platforms,” the caption explained.
“In her greeting, the Crown Princess writes among other things: ′’It has been a very special year. For all of us. It has been a challenging year. For a lot of people, the restrictions have caused a great social deprivation. But 2020 also confirmed us how much we need each other. How much it means to have someone close in life.'”
A longer version of her end-of-year letter was also published on her charity the Mary Foundation’s website.
In the past, Princess Mary has gathered with her four children Prince Christian, 15, Princess Isabella, 13, and twins Princess Josephine and Prince Vincent, both nine, as well as husband Crown Prince Frederik for their yearly Christmas card photo.
Earlier in the month, the Danish royals came face-to-face with the harsh realities of COVID-19 as it was revealed Mary and Fred’s oldest son Prince Christian had tested positive to the virus following an outbreak at his school.
In a statement, the Palace revealed: “The Crown Prince and Crown Princess were informed yesterday, Sunday 6 December 2020, of a local outbreak of COVID-19 at Tranegård School in Hellerup. Prince Christian has subsequently tested positive for COVID-19.”
The teenager remained in isolation in Frederik VIII’s Palace at Amalienborg while the rest of his family were tested for COVID.
“The Crown Prince and Crown Princess and their three youngest children have subsequently been tested for COVID-19. All test results have been negative,” the palace confirmed.
