It is a royal members duty to remain calm, gracious and patient in the public eye. Even while giving a blunt response to a repetitive question regarding tensions surrounding the Danish royal family, Princess Mary remained the face of a perfect working royal.

During a tour of Vietnam, Princess Mary was asked an uncomfortable question involving Queen Margrethe of Denmark’s decision to strip four grandchildren of the royal titles but the Australian-born Princess quickly cut the journalist off.

“I have nothing more to add to what I already said. I hope you didn’t travel all the way here to ask that question. Do you have any other questions?” Mary responded.

“Princess Marie told me that your relationship is complicated,” the journalist said.

“I have nothing further to add.”

Queen Margrethe announced her decision in late September 2022 and revealed she hoped her grandchildren could “shape their own lives without being limited by the special considerations and duties” that coincide with being royalty.

“Change can be extremely difficult and can really hurt. But this does not mean that the decision is not the right one,” Princess Mary told Danish paper Ekstra Bladet.

Mary also confessed that her own children – Prince Christian, Princess Isabella, Princess Josephine and Prince Vincent – could also lose their titles when the time comes.

The royal titles will officially be stripped as of January 1, 2023. The grandchildren will be identified as their excellencies and will become counts and countesses.

While the ruling seemingly had good intentions, what came after for the Danish royal family was nothing but trouble.

The rift between Danish brothers Prince Joachim and Prince Frederick only grew. Especially after Spanish magazine Vanitatis El Confidential made the shocking claims the younger brother was harbouring romantic feelings for his sister-in-law Mary.

Which could explain the tension between Princess Mary and Princess Marie after the publication wrote Joachim tried to kiss Mary.

“With obvious signs of drunkenness, it seems that the youngest son of Queen Margrethe tried to stamp his lips on his sister-in-law’s mouth,” a source claimed.

“[Mary] got out of the way as she could and with an unperturbed smile, while [Joachim’s wife] Marie witnessed the embarrassing moment.”
