Princess Charlotte has kicked off 2018 with a bang, starting the first chapter of her education at Willcocks Nursery School in London.

To mark the milestone the adorable two-year-old posed for a series of portraits taken by her avid photographer mother, The Duchess of Cambridge, on Monday January 8.

In the snaps, Princess Charlotte beams with confidence on the steps of her Kensington Palace home.

The tiny tot looks stylish rocking a retro red overcoat by Amaia Kids, a pony print backpack by Cath Kidston, grey stockings, red leather buckle-up shoes, a pink scarf and a red bow in her shiny brunette locks.

Alongside the album, the palace explained in a statement: โ€œThe Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are very pleased to share two photographs of Princess Charlotte at Kensington Palace this morning.โ€

Prince William and Duchess Catherine, who are expecting their third child together, confirmed Charlotte would be attending the โ€œkind and gentleโ€ Willcocks Nursery School, which sits barely half a mile from Kensington Palace, in December.

A spokeswoman for Kensington Palace opened up about the coupleโ€™s choice, saying: โ€œThey felt it was ideal as a first step for Princess Charlotteโ€™s early education and they were impressed by the team that work there.โ€

A rep for the school added: โ€œWe are delighted that The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have chosen the Willcocks Nursery School for Princess Charlotte. We look forward to welcoming Charlotte to our nursery in January.โ€

Charlotte will be enrolled in the morning school, lunchtime club and afternoon school, attending from 9am until 4pm a few days a week to prepare her for โ€œbig school.โ€

She will be required to take in her own packed lunch and will join a range of activities including cooking, music and acting.

The โ€œtraditionalโ€ school describes the educational environment as โ€œfun and structuredโ€ with lots of โ€œfree play where children embark on the first stages of learning to read, write and to understand simple numbers with the minimum of pressure.โ€

Princess Charlotte is set to welcome a new sibling in April this year.

Itโ€™s expected to set the beloved family back an eye-watering sum of ยฃ19,770 (A$34,481) for three terms.

The choice will likely come as a surprise to royal watchers, who speculated the royal tot would follow her brother Prince George, four, to Thomasโ€™s Battersea, where he started in September.

Whatโ€™s more, the prestigious school is significant departure from the way in which George was first introduced to his schooling years โ€“ attending a modestly-priced Montessori nursery school in Norfolk.

2018 is shaping up to be a huge year for little Charlotte and her family!

In April, sheโ€™ll become the middle child after Prince William and Duchess Catherine welcome their third child.

And in May she and her older brother Prince George, four, are tipped to have starring roles in their uncle Harryโ€™s wedding to Meghan Markle.

Charlotte will be enrolled in the morning school, lunchtime club and afternoon school, attending from 9am until 4pm a few days a week to prepare her for โ€œbig schoolโ€.
