The mother-of-two opted for an understated yet elegant ensemble in a lace veil, white overcoat, matching leather gloves, cream pumps and a bright red lip.

In fact, Charlene is one of only seven exclusive people who are allowed to wear white when meeting the Pope – which is known as “privilège du blanc” in French.

The honour is only given out to Catholic queens and princesses, meanwhile as the head of the Church of England Queen Elizabeth must wear black.

The six other VIPs who are allowed to don white are Princess Marina of Naples, Queen Sofia of Spain, Queen Paola of Belgium, Grand Duchess Maria Teresa of Luxembourg, Queen Mathilde of Belgium and Queen Paola of Belgium.

No doubt the trio had lots to chat about, including the fact their twins Princess Gabriella and Prince Jacques recently celebrated their first birthday.

They also exchanged gifts during the official meeting.

The former Olympic swimmer was born as a Protestant but converted to Catholicism after her 2011 nuptials to Prince Albert.

“Catholicism is the state religion [in Monaco]. But for me, it represents much more. The values of this religion profoundly touch me and correspond perfectly to my spirit,” she has said.
