This royal legal loophole means Princess Beatrice doesn’t need The Queen’s permission to marry, but Prince Harry did!

Princess Beatrice has only been dating her boyfriend Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi for less than a year, but already there are rumours that the eldest daughter of Sarah Ferguson and Prince Andrew is about to tie the knot with her new beau.

Last month, a telling clue that the couple could be about to announce their engagement surfaced, with betting agency Ladbrokes suspending bets on their engagement, suggesting that an announcement is imminent.

A Ladbrokes spokesperson explained: “There’s been plenty of interest in this over the last few days and with the two seemingly smitten, we’re banking on an announcement being made before the year is out.”

Some members of the royal family require official approval from The Queen for their marriage to be permitted.

Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan had to get their relationship signed off by Her Majesty prior to their May 2018 wedding.

An old law, the 1772 Royal Marriages Act, dictated that all marriages to members of the British royal family had to be approved by the monarch. If a descendent of the king or queen married without consent, that marriage would be considered null and void.

But in 2013 that outdated law was replaced by the Succession to the Crown Act, which states that only the first six in line to the throne need the monarch’s consent.

As Princess Beatrice is ninth in line to the throne (her sister Eugenie is 10th), she will not be required to seek her grandmother’s permission to marry Edoardo, should the pair choose to tie the knot.

Prince Harry, on the other hand, is sixth in line, so he was legally required to get Her Majesty to sign off on his union with Duchess Meghan.
