Princess Beatrice’s newborn daughter may not inherit an HRH title, but that doesn’t mean the child will be completely without a title.
In the British monarchy, titles like HRH (His/Her Royal Highness) are only passed down through the male line.
That means Beatrice’s daughter with Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi won’t be known as a princess or even a duchess, because her link to the royal family is through her mother.
However, Beatrice isn’t the child’s only noble parent.
Property developer Edoardo, who is reportedly a multi-millionaire, is also an Italian count and could pass a title to his daughter through his noble heritage.
The couple’s baby girl could inherit the Italian title of Donna Nobile, or noblewoman, through her Italian father’s family
Though titles like this aren’t as official as an HRH, they’re still used in Italy as a courtesy and are passed down through noble families.
But just because Edoardo and Beatrice’s baby is entitled to the title doesn’t mean the couple will actually use it.
In recent decades a trend has emerged where British royals who spend less time in the public eye choose not to bestow titles upon their children.
Prince Edward and Sophie, Countess of Wessex notably chose not to give their two children HRH titles even though they were technically entitled to them.
Instead, Lady Louise Windsor and James, Viscount Severn were given lesser titles and may choose to take on HRH titles when they each turn 18.
The decision was made because both children, being more ‘peripheral’ royals, will likely have to work normal jobs and have a more grounded life than, say, the Cambridge children.
“We try to bring them up with the understanding that they are very likely to have to work for a living,” Sophie previously told the Sunday Times.
There are many more royal children who weren’t entitled to any formal titles, including Princess Eugenie’s son August, and Zara and Mike Tindall’s three children.
Only time will tell if Beatrice and Edoardo will choose to follow the trend and forego titles entirely for their daughter or choose to use the Italian title Donna Nobile.
The couple welcomed their baby girl on Saturday, September 18 but waited until Monday, September 20 to announce her birth.
They have not yet revealed her name to the world, nor have they shared any pictures of her with the public.
She is their first child together, though Edoardo has a son from a previous relationship named Christopher ‘Wolfie’ Woolf.
Beatrice is understood to have taken to the role of stepmother with flying colours and has gushed about her “bonus son” on several occasions.
