Prince William and Kate Middleton plant oak tree in Canberra

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge spent the morning at the National Arboretum in Canberra planting an oak tree.

It forms part of the ‘100 Forests and 100 Gardens’ design by Taylor Cullity Lethlean Landscape Architects and Tonkin Zulaikha Greer Architects for the government’s regeneration project following the devastating ACT bushfires in 2003.

Sebastian has Down Syndrome, a vision impairment and is hearing impaired, but he doesn’t let this get in his way of joining in everything his brother does.

The twins both play soccer and they love to swim. Sebastian also loves to climb and recently received a little legend award from Gai Brodtmann for children achieving whilst dealing with adversity. He attends Malkara School in Garran and is starting to put words together, while his brother, Oliver goes to St Jude’s Primary School.

Watching from the sidelines today were Mum, Moira Lye, who has had an ongoing battle with cancer for many years; Dad, Greg and their three siblings, Madeleine, 15, Zachary, 13, and Harrison, 10.

The twins had been practising their watering ahead of today’s event and delighted the royal couple and the crowds especially when Sebastian shouted: “Hi Mum.”

Students from Black Mountain School presented the Duchess, who looked spectacular in a bright green Catherine Walker coat dress and nude patent platform heels, with a posy of flowers.

The royal couple, accompanied by the ACT Chief Minister, Katy Gallagher, then walked through the playground to meet – and charm – some very excited local children.

In a nod to the Duchess’s position as patron of the Scouts, two troops were here today – Southwell and Lake Burley Griffin. Nine-year-old Avery Frew told The Weekly he liked the couple “because they’re famous, rich and royal”. Tonight these cubs will be part of a 300-strong sleepover – rising for tomorrow’s Anzac Dawn Service.

Kayla Rummukainen met the Duchess as she came out of the children’s playground and gave her a pair of cute blue and white striped socks knitted especially for baby George by her husband’s grandma, Irma. “These will be perfect for George next winter,” the Duchess said. “It looks like a lot of work went into them.”

Next stop today is a reception hosted by the Prime Minister at Parliament House.
