Appearing the picture of good health, the Duke of Edinburgh stood alongside his wife of 68-years to welcome the President of Germany, Joachim Gauck, to Buckingham Palace on Wednesday.
The at-home appearance, which was held at Buckingham Palace, marked the first for the 94-year-old royal since he had to reluctantly pull out of the Battle of Jutland memorial service on Tuesday.
“Following doctor’s advice, the Duke of Edinburgh has reluctantly decided not to attend the commemorations marking the Battle of Jutland in Kirkwall and Hoy,” a statement from Buckingham Palace read.
“The Princess Royal, who was already attending the events, will represent the royal family.”
The 94-year-old appeared in good spirits to meet the German politician.
Despite the royal being unable to make the appearance, Queen Elizabeth’s husband was not admitted to hospital and had every intention to carry out the remainder of his official duties throughout the week – beginning with this warm welcome to the German President.

The chipper Prince, who is set to turn 95 on June 10th, last had a health scare over three years ago but has since been as fit as fiddle.
In late May, he attended a lavish Buckingham Palace garden party alongside Britain’s longest-reigning monarch and her grandson Prince William and his wife Catherine.
He has also been inseparable from the birthday girl throughout her ongoing, extravagant 90th birthday celebrations.
