We often talk about the woman behind the man but Prince Philip is the unforgettable and incomparable man behind the woman, who continues to delight us with gaffes, a wicked sense of humour and the ability to make our sovereign smile brighter than her crown jewels sparkle.

In celebration of his 94th birthday we decided to take a walk down memory lane and reminisce over this captivating royal.

From the early days raising a family in the public eye, to serving his country as the Duke of Edinburgh and everything in between, there’s no denying Prince Philip has stood the test of time and so has his love for the woman he married almost 68 year-ago, Queen Elizabeth.

It’s a love story that transcends time, fit for a fairy-tale book. So what’s their secret? “You can take it from me, the Queen has the quality of tolerance in abundance.”

On marriage: “I don’t think a prostitute is more moral than a wife, but they are doing the same thing.”

The Duke of Edinburgh never fails to offer some first class advice. His thoughts on how difficult to be wealthy in Britain: “What about Tom Jones? He’s made a million and he’s a bloody awful singer.” Well there you go, there’s no excuse.

Prince Philip took one look at Ethiopian art in 1965 and remarked: “It looks like the kind of thing my daughter would bring back from school art lessons.” Ouch!

During a visit to the Caribbean Prince Philip told the matron of a bug-plagued hospital: “You have mosquitoes. I have the press.”

Never one to be afraid of offending someone, the Duke once told the President of Nigeria, who was wearing a national robe, “You look like you’re ready for bed!”

Prince Philip once quipped, “I never see any home cooking – all I get is fancy stuff.” In that case he may need to pop over to Carole Middleton’s place for a Sunday roast sometime.

To a car park attendant who didn’t recognise him in 1997, he snapped: “You bloody silly fool!” To be fair he is married to The Queen!

We’ll never forget the time Prince Philip asked Aussie actress Cate Blanchett to fix his DVD player because she worked “in the film industry.” In 2008, he remarked: “There’s a cord sticking out of the back. Might you tell me where it goes?”

He may be a royal but sometimes it the simple things in life that make him smile: “Get me a beer. I don’t care what kind it is, just get me a beer!” We can all drink to that. Cheers to 94!
