Prince Henrik of Denmark has been admitted to hospital

The Prince's hospitalisation follows controversial comments made about his burial.

Prince Henrik of Denmark has been admitted to hospital due to complications from a previous surgery.

The 83-year-old was on holiday in France with several other members of the royal family when he was rushed to the Rigshospitalet in Copenhagen, Denmark.

It’s not yet known when the royal, Princess Mary’s father-in-law, will be discharged from the facility.

On Monday, the palace said in a press release: “His Royal Highness Prince Henrik was admitted to Rigshospitalet in Copenhagen yesterday evening after suffering pain in his right leg.”

“The reason for the hospitalisation is progressive pain following surgery the prince had in mid-July, when the prince’s right groin was operated on and balloon angioplasty was performed in his right pelvic artery.”

“The prince is being treated medicinally, and additional surgical procedures are not expected at present. It is uncertain how long the Prince will be hospitalised at Rigshospitalet.”

Prince Henrik is pictured with his wife Queen Margrethe II along with Prince Federik, Princess Mary and their children.

The Prince’s hospitalisation follows controversial comments made about his burial.

He recently announced that he does not plan to be buried with his wife, Queen Margrethe II, because he is upset about the fact that he was never made King Consort.

The pair have been married since 1967. And over the years, Henrik has repeatedly voiced his anger over the perceived slight.

“It is no secret that the Prince for many years has been unhappy with his role and the title he has been awarded in the Danish monarchy. This discontent has grown more and more in recent years,” the Royal Danish House’s director of communications told tabloid BT.

“For the Prince, the decision not to buried beside the Queen is the natural consequence of not having been treated equally to his spouse – by not having the title and role he has desired,” the spokesperson said.

Much like Queen Elizabeth, Margrethe kept Henrik as a prince so that she was head of state, despite princesses traditionally becoming queens when their husbands take the throne in Denmark.

Prince Henrik retired last year and renounced his title of prince consort and has participated in very few official duties since then. In fact, he didn’t even attend the queen’s 75th birthday claiming he was sick, but was seen partying in Venice with friends the very next day.

He instead prefers to spend his time at his private vineyard in France, but is still married to the queen and, on paper, they live together.

The pair had been expected to be buried next to each other in Roskilde Cathedral in a sarcophagus made by Danish artist Bjørn Nørgaard.
