According to a new report from the Mail on Sunday, Prince William’s younger brother allegedly joked he was being a bad uncle after missing some of Princess Charlotte’s major milestones, including her birth.
Due to his trip to Africa, Harry had to miss his niece’s christening at the start of July but it was all for a good cause!
Simson Uri-Khob, who runs Save The Rhino, told the British publication that Harry joked to one of his companions: “What a bad uncle I am! I should really be there.”
Before adding poignantly, “But today my heart is here, this is where I want to be…”
The fifth-in-line to the throne felt completely at ease with his fellow campers, openly chatting about his family and life.
The cheeky Prince also admitted the hardships that follow being a royal, in particular the constant need of protection and a bodyguard.
“We asked him what about if you’re with a girlfriend. Are they around then?” Simson recalled to the British publication.
“Harry said, ‘unfortunately yes, more than ever. But I know how to handle that.’”
“I have to go along with the way my life is. In many ways I’m very privileged but I know what I have to do,” he apparently told Simson.
Harry didn’t let the accompaniment of a bodyguard come in the way of his conservation work. The Prince opted to sleeping in the open, despite the dangers of wild animals like snakes and hyenas.
“‘I told him it would be safer to sleep in his tent. We know anything can happen – from snakes approaching to insect bites, or an elephant or hyena coming into camp,” Simson laughed.
He added: “Of course every time Harry slept out, his bodyguards had to. There was a lot of teasing and joking about him spending his life with them. It was very funny.”
The camp-side banter came about as the former military pilot lives out his dream, working with endangered animals in the wild.
Harry has helped track lions in the 10,000sq mile Palmwag Reserve in Namibia’s north-west Kunene region.
In fact, Harry has asked for no special treatment, happily rising with his team at 5.30am.
“I’ve come to Africa to be free,” Simson recalled Harry quipping during a camp-fire conversation.
“I want to spend time here regularly, it’s really precious to me. I’m learning a lot,” the 30-year-old reportedly mused to his fellow conservation worker.
During his three-month stay in Africa, the Prince has also been at the Khulula Care for Wild centre in South Africa working with rhinos.
It’s clear that the kind-natured Prince is doing great work, something that stems from his mother Princess Diana.
Harry has continued her charitable legacy, especially when he returned to Lesotho in December to open Sentebale’s Mamohoto Centre.
Harry said of the charity: “By doing this I can follow in my mother’s footsteps and keep her legacy alive.”
So while Harry may joke he’s a “bad uncle” he really is becoming a great example for his niece and nephew.
In fact Harry will be a guiding force for the two young royals. He admitted earlier in the year that he’d “definitely encourage George and Charlotte if she wants to, to have some sort of involvement in the Armed Forces, guaranteed.”
