He may only be eight-years-old but Prince George is already following in his father’s footsteps and showing concerns for the planet.
In an interview with BBC Newscast ahead of his inaugural Earthshot Prize, Prince William spoke candidly about his eldest son’s litter picking trip organised by his school Thomas’s Battersea.
“George at school recently has been doing litter picking and I didn’t realise but talking to him the other day he was already showing that he was getting a bit confused and annoyed by the fact they went out litter picking one day and then the very next day they did the same route, the same time and pretty much all the same litter they picked up back again,” Prince William explained.
“I think that for him, he was trying to understand how and where it came from. He was like ‘We cleaned this, why has it not gone away?’
The Duke of Cambridge also remarked: “If we’re not careful, we’re robbing from our children’s future.”
It seems litter picking runs in the family as William’s own father Prince Charles took him and brother Prince Harry out to do so while they were on holiday.
“We were in Norfolk on school holidays, and we went out litter-picking with him,” the Duke of Cambridge shared in documentary Prince, Son and Heir: Charles at 70 back in 2018.
“And again, both of us thought, ‘Well this is perfectly normal, everyone must do it’. We were there with our spikes, stabbing the rubbish into black plastic bags.”
Prince Harry also added that he “used to get taken the mickey out of at school for just picking up rubbish.”
“I didn’t go out consciously looking for it. When you go for walks anywhere, if you see something, it stands out, you pick it up… It’s like I’ve literally done this because I’m programmed to do it, because my father did it. And actually, we should all be doing it,” the Duke of Sussex said.

Despite having privileges as senior members of the royal family, Prince William and wife Duchess Catherine have striven to provide their children with a sense of normalcy as well.
In September, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were spotted with Prince George, Princess Charlotte, six, and Prince Louis, three at a local pub close to their Norfolk residence Anmer Hall, enjoying a spot of lunch.
According to onlookers, the family-of-five were dressed in casual clothes and seemed just like any other family as they sat around a bench outside and tucked into burgers and chips.
