Duchess-to-be Meghan Markle is trending again online — but not because of her achievements, activism, or acting. No, Prince Harry’s betrothed is trending because of her “skinny legs.” And this isn’t even the first time her gams have been slammed.
On Wednesday, April 18, the royal couple stopped by London’s Queen Elizabeth II Conference Centre to meet with delegates at the Commonwealth Youth Forum, a meeting for youth leaders from the 53 member states of the Commonwealth of Nations to discuss cross-cultural issues and challenges. (Harry was just named an ambassador for the forum.)
During the outing, Meghan looked characteristically stylish, wearing a white-and-black striped sleeveless dress by Altuzarra, a black blazer by Camilla and Marc, and shoes by Tamara Mellon. But apparently, the appearance of her legs sparked criticism online, just as they did a month ago when she and Harry were photographed at Westminster Abbey on Commonwealth Day.
“Do NOT let #MeghanMarkle wear [a] dress or skirt again,” wrote one Twitter user on that occasion, per Revelist. “Her legs are so uglily skinny and shapeless.” Another person similarly added, “THOSE ARE SOME SERIOUS UGLY LOOKING LEGS.” And a third hater wrote, “Did Meghan Markle never walk as a child? They are seriously underdeveloped limbs.”
Sadly, these aren’t the only times that people have picked on the 36-year-old’s appearance. In recent months, Meghan has also been criticized for putting her hair in a messy bun and for not wearing pantyhose, as AOL pointed out.
Even worse, the former Suits star has additionally been attacked over her mixed-race status ever since she and Harry became an item. “It’s disheartening,” she told BBC News in November. “You know, it’s a shame that that is the climate in this world to focus that much on that or that that would be discriminatory in that sense, but I think… at the end of the day I’m really just proud of who I am and where I come from.”
We hope Meghan can ignore the image-obsessed haters as much as she can dismiss the racist trolls. And perhaps the rest of us can focus on more important issues!
