When Meghan Markle and Prince Harry announced that they had welcomed a baby boy, it would be safe to say the world was very surprised – and not just because it was a major royal event.
Indeed, right up until Meghan’s due date, details around the royal birth had been kept hush-hush, with both the name and gender being anyone’s guess.
But that didn’t stop royal fans from indulging their guesses and deciding for themselves that they knew exactly what to expect.
The only thing was… they didn’t.
Indeed, with betting agencies taking bets left right and centre, it became clear that the overwhelming odds were in favour of Meghan and Harry having a baby girl.
In January, UK bookmaker Paddy Power Betfair actually suspended betting on the gender of the royal baby because of the overwhelming number of people betting on a girl
At the time, spokesperson Katie Baylis told Hello!: “We haven’t seen too much betting on this market for a while, but tonight all of a sudden we have seen a flurry of betting activity on the baby to a girl.”
She added: “If the punters are anything to go by, then we could have a new Princess in a couple of months’ time.”
But oh how they turned out to be wrong and what an amazing surprise it was!
On Monday, May 6th, along with sharing in joy and excitement at the news that Meghan and Harry had welcomed their new baby, there was one big shock in store – and it came in the form of their baby announcement.
Plastered across a bold image with a blue background posted on the @SussexRoyal Instagram account, a statement read: “It’s a BOY”.
But after the surprise (which was just as pleasant as it would have been if Baby Sussex were a girl – might we add) wore off, there was something else we realised.
Maybe we should have known it was a boy all along?!
The reasoning is clear: After one quick glance at the picture it was obvious that it was bringing news of a boy – the deep navy blue colour is often associated with males.
And that’s why it might have been obvious all along that the royal baby was going to be a boy – the Sussex’s choice of using the shade of blue on their official royal channel, which they newly launched in March, is a very fitting tribute to their first child.
And while it should be noted that Meghan isn’t one to take up gender stereotypes (it was even revealed that her baby’s nursery would be gender neutral earlier this year), there’s no denying the branding looks all the more sleek with a young male royal now making up the third member of team Sussex.
And that’s not the only sneaky clue we’ve unearthed!
There were also other sneaky shades of blue during Meghan’s pregnancy that we couldn’t help but notice – one being her choice of outfits during her pregnancy – shades of pastel and turquoise blue made up a big part of the Duchesses maternity wardrobe.
What’s more, there were solid hints at the Duchesses lavish baby shower, which was held in New York City in February.
One guest, fellow actress Abigail Spencer, was seen carrying a bag which had blue wrapping paper, while Meghan’s close pal Daniel Martin posted a picture of the shower’s cute cookies, which were in the shape of a stork carrying what looks like a blue or green blanket.
Finally, Meghan’s appearance at the International Women’s Day panel earlier this year could have also been a dead giveaway as to the gender of her baby.
After being asked how her pregnancy is going, Meghan replied that all had been going well, referencing a documentary she had been watching on Netflix about feminism.
She explained of the doco: “One of the things they said during pregnancy is, ‘I feel the embryonic kicking of feminism.’ “
The 37-year-old continued: “I loved that, so boy or girl, or whatever it is, we hope that’s the case.”
Now that we know the gender of Baby Sussex, there’s only a few more things we’ll be waiting with baited breath to confirm in the coming days – his elusive new name and what he actually looks like!
But fear not, royal-fanatics – we won’t have to wait long to find out.
Speaking in an adorable interview which took place in the hours following the birth of his new son, Prince Harry confirmed that the world would soon be seeing the Sussex trio, stating: “For us I think we’ll be seeing [the press] in probably two days time as a family to be able to share it with you.”
He then added: “So everyone can see the baby!”
And luckily, a reporter was on-hand to ask him the question on everyone’s lips: What would he and Meghan name their newborn!?
“[We’re] still thinking about names,” Harry replied.
“It’s a little bit overdue so we’ve had a bit of time to think about it, but that’s the next bit.”
We’ll be ready and waiting, Harry!
