The young royals are in esteemed company as Prince Charles and the Duke of Edinburgh, who also acted as club president for two terms in 1949 and 1974, are also life members.

The club, which has 23,000 members and is the owner of the prestigious Lord’s Ground, only started allowing female membership 15 years ago in 1999 when it allowed 10 women to join, ending 212 years of male exclusivity.

Of his newest royal members MCC president David Morgan said: “We are delighted that Their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have accepted our invitation to become honorary life members of MCC.

“This great club has enjoyed an excellent relationship with the Royal Family over the years and long may it continue.”
