It’s the modern day fairytale that has captivated the world.
After meeting through mutual friends Prince Carl Philip, Duke of Värmland has been with former glamour model and reality star Sofia Hellqvist since 2010. While eyebrows were raised over Sofia’s former jobs, which include starring in the 2005 dating show Paradise Hotel and racy photo shoots, this pair prove that your past does not define your future.
They announced their engagement in June last year and finally tied the knot in Stockholm’s Royal Palace chapel on Saturday in a lavish ceremony.
It marks the first time a Swedish citizen has become a princess in over a hundred years. Sofia has now inherited the title Princess Sofia of Sweden, Duchess of Värmland.
Their ceremony had all the makings of a grandiose day including horse-drawn carriages, glamorous traditions, a very regal setting and of course a slew of royal guests including Crown Princess Mary and Prince Frederik of Denmark and British royals, Sophie Countess of Wessex and Prince Edward.
In a moment that looked like it was straight out of a movie, handsome Prince Carl, 36, addressed the thousands of well-wishers from the palace and remarked: “It shows Sweden is a warm country with lots of love,” before kissing his bride.
Throughout the ceremony, which was televised to the nation, the Prince fought back tears.
