Prince Carl Philip and Princess Sofia’s sweet son has been baptised before family and friends in the Royal Chapel at the Drottningholm Palace Church in Stockholm.
The joyous event comes almost exactly three months after the little royal’s birth.
Prince Gabriel wore a lace christening gown for the special occasion, which was first worn by the king’s father Prince Gustaf Adolf in 1906. It’s the same robe worn by his big brother, Prince Alexander, cousins and even his own father for their baptisms.
Sofia also chose to follow tradition wearing a classically Swedish outfit for the occasion complete with an embroidered head cap, striped apron and buckled shoes.
Gabriel was well-behaved throughout the ceremony save for a few tears when officiating clergyman Archbishop Emeritus Anders Wejryd bathed his tiny head at the font. He was baptised using water from a spring on the island of Öland — a longstanding custom of the royal family.
On the other hand, the little prince’s one-year-old brother Alexander caused a stir as he began to tire of his dad’s efforts to entertain him during the 35 minute service. He eventually broke free and began to explore the venue before tumbling over on the church’s hard stone floor. Luckily he wasn’t badly hurt, after a few tears he was back to his chipper self.
After the beautiful proceedings, the proud parents allowed family and friends to come forward and wish their son well before indulging in a celebratory lunch and reception at the palace.
Carl, 38, and Sofia, 32, welcomed their second child together on Thursday, August 31.
Shortly after the birth was announced, the proud dad-of-two mustered up the energy to offer a brief statement to reporters.
“We are really happy,” he said. “It’s a very cute boy.”
“It feels great, pure joy! He seems to be a very charming little boy and Sofia is a wonderful mom. It’s overwhelming,” he continued. “He has a draw of both me and Sofia.”
Carl and his wife — a former model and reality television star — announced in March that they were expanding their family.
“We are happy to announce that we are expecting a child, a sibling to Prince Alexander,” they said in a statement alongside a darling family photo. “We are looking forward to welcoming a new little member to our family.”
Congratulations again to the happy family-of-four!
