The grandsons of Prince Philip, Harry and William, have put on a united front as they grieve the loss of their grandfather.
Overnight, both Prince Harry and Prince William released emotional statements in the wake of Prince Philip’s death on April 9 – and it’s the ultimate proof that love truly conquers all.
Prince William shared his own, heartfelt tribute to Philip alongside a gorgeous unseen photograph of his grandfather with his great grandson, Prince George.
Aged two at the time, Prince George is perched atop a carriage beside Philip as the two smile in the sunlight.
The image was captured by keen photographer Duchess Catherine.
In his statement, William wrote: “My grandfather’s century of life was defined by service – to his country and Commonwealth, to his wife and Queen, and to our family.”
“I feel lucky to have not just had his example to guide me, but his enduring presence well into my own adult life – both through good times and the hardest days. I will always be grateful that my wife had so many years to get to know my grandfather and for the kindness he showed her.”
The Duke explained his children’s joy in seeing their grandfather come to collect them in his carriage, as well as “seeing for themselves his infectious sense of adventure as well as his mischievous sense of humour!”
The Prince ended the beautiful tribute: “My grandfather was an extraordinary man and part of an extraordinary generation. Catherine and I will continue to do what he would have wanted and will support The Queen in the years ahead. I will miss my Grandpa, but I know he would want us to get on with the job.”
Meanwhile, Prince Harry shared his own sentimental words about his grandfather.
Publishing the statement with media and on his foundation website, Archewell, Harry wrote: “My grandfather was a man of service, honour and great humour. He was authentically himself, with a seriously sharp wit, and could hold the attention of any room due to his charm—and also because you never knew what he might say next.”
And while Philip was known to all across the world as the reigning Monarch’s husband, The Prince humanised the grief he and his family felt with one beautifully worded, comically quipped sentence.
“He was my grandpa: master of the barbecue, legend of banter, and cheeky right ’til the end.”
Harry is now quarantining in his former home Frogmore Cottage in Windsor and will attend the funeral on Saturday alongside his family.
His wife Duchess Meghan is heavily pregnant with their second child and was unfortunately unable to fly back.
Nonetheless, were certain she too will be taking a moment back home in the US to remember the strong, stoic grandfather-in-law she no doubt admired immensely.
