Darren McGrady, also known as “The Royal Chef”, took to Twitter to express his disgust at the state of the final resting place of Diana at the Spencer family’s Althorp estate.

“Sad to see Earl Spencer @AlthorpEstate has neglected Diana’s resting place,” he said in one tweet, which he accompanied with pictures of a filthy-looking lake.

In another tweet he said the tomb looked “like a tatty old shed at the bottom of the garden”.

The Express reported that Earl Spencer, 50, declined to comment but a spokesman for Althorp said: “Algae is an unsightly problem for many lakes in the summer months” and that “exceptional temperatures of this summer have made the task of keeping it entirely under control extremely difficult”.

“Princess Diana prided herself on her beautiful home when alive. Please don’t let her resting place look like this pic,” Darren McGrady wrote on Twitter with the left picture. The right picture shows Diana’s grave in 2008. Pictures: Darren McGrady and Getty Images
