If there was ever a time where royal family members would keep to themselves, it would be during a global pandemic.
Indeed, with most of Europe in various forms of lockdown, it’s to be expected that the royals are also remaining completely siloed in their respective palaces (not the worst place to be, we might add)
But that doesn’t necessarily mean they can’t connect in other ways – the Danish and Swedish royals just proved as much.
Sharing a picture to Instagram on Sunday evening, the Danish royal Palace revealed a good-natured call that took place between Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden as their respective countries faced each other in the Handball World Cup finale.
“Good luck, Sweden, may the best team win,” the Palace captioned the image.
Frederik is seen standing beside his TV speaking on the phone in one split screen, and on the other, Victoria stands next to her own TV alongside her excitable family – husband Prince Daniel and children Princess Estelle and Prince Oscar.
The Danish Palace also revealed in the caption that the picture of Frederik was snapped by his eldest son, 15-year-old Prince Christian as they watched the finale together.
In the Championship match, Denmark reigned victorious over Sweden, winning with 26 points to 24.
The game, which took place in Egypt’s Cairo, marked the second consecutive win for Denmark, who also won the tournament back in 2019.
It’s no wonder then, that Crown Prince Frederik was all the more excited.
In a second clip posted to Instagram, the future King is seen on a TV screen in the players room belonging to the Danish team. He congratulates them on their big win, with the Palace sharing Frederik’s direct statement: “A big congratulations with another World Cup gold, I just called and congratulated the whole team on the fantastic and deserved victory.”
Danish fans of the team will have plenty to celebrate over the coming days as they relive some of the Championship’s best moments.
The Crown Prince’s family were getting well into the spirit of things throughout, with the Palace sharing a sweet image featuring three of Frederik and wife Crown Princess Mary’s children, Princess Isabella, Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine as they watched one of the earlier games nervously.
In a second snap, the three are seen jumping in celebration.
The royal crossover is a rare sight in normal times, not to mention during a global pandemic, so it was all the more special to see the Danish and Swedish royals come together on this occasion.
Who knows, perhaps by the time the next big world cup rolls around – for any popular sport – we’ll be reverting back to pre-COVID routines, and the royals can send their best wishes to each other in person.
