Crown Prince Frederik rushed to hospital after a skiing injury in Switzerland

Crown Prince Frederik has undergone surgery after sustaining an injury from a skiing accident in Switzerland.

The 51-year-old husband of Crown Princess Mary was taken back to the Danish capital of Copenhagen for surgery and the Danish Palace has confirmed the news via an official statement.

Crown Prince Frederik has undergone minor shoulder surgery.

“His Royal Highness The Crown Prince suffered a minor injury in the left shoulder last week in connection with skiing in Switzerland,” the Palace’s statement read.

“The Crown Prince has therefore today been examined and treated at the Rigshospitalet in Copenhagen,” it added.

“The treatment consisted of an uncomplicated operation, which proceeded according to plan. The shoulder injury does not affect the Crown Prince’s official program.”

The future Danish King is an avid skier and he, along with his wife Crown Princess Mary and their four children, have been living in the ski resort town of Verbier while the royal children attend the Lemania-Verbier International School for a 12 week spring term.

Prince Christian, 14, Princess Isabella, 12, and eight-year-old twins Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine are attending boarding school to provide them with an international experience, as they usually attend Tranegårdsskolen school in Gentofte, Denmark.

Prince Frederik is no stranger to injuries- the sporty royal was forced to pull out of the 10km Royal Run in May last year after enduring a back injury and in 2018 had surgery for a slipped disk.

“I have had a few back problems lately which have stopped me from going running as I would like to,” Prince Frederik said in a video statement at the time.

That said, the Danish royal family-of-six are an active bunch and are often snapped doing everything from skiing and sledding to long-distance running.

The Danish royals are fans of the slopes.

Prince Frederik’s injury comes just days after his wife Crown Princess Mary’s 48th birthday.

To celebrate her special day, the royal household shared a brand-new official portrait of the Crown Princess photographed by Daniel Stjerne.

Dressed in a navy V-neck top with drop down blue earrings, the royal mum-of-four smiles proudly at the camera and proved once again that she is an ageless beauty.
