Whether they were born into the family or married in, a handful have made headlines for all the wrong reasons, whether it’s for their chain-smoking or daring clothing (or lack of in some cases).

Take a step back in time with us and check out the blue-blooded folk who aren’t afraid to kick up their heels and have a good time.

Princess Margaret

The original royal rebel was none other than the Queen’s own sister, Princess Margaret.

A pack-a-day-smoker from the age of 15 and ardent lover of parties, Liz’s younger sister dealt with various health problems including having part of her lung removed and suffering from three strokes.

Margaret also had an affair with gardener and Roddy Llewellyn was even rumoured to have had a fling with Rolling Stones frontman, Mick Jagger.

“She found him sexy and exciting. If you saw them laughing together, dancing, the way she’d put her hand on his knee and giggle at his stories like a schoolgirl, you’d have thought there was something going on,” a courtier explained in The Wild Life And Mad Genius Of Mick Jagger by Christopher Andersen.

Sarah ‘Fergie’ Ferguson

Like tea and scones, Fergie and the toe-sucking scandal go hand-in-hand.

In case you were living under a rock, in 1992 a bikini-clad Duchess of York (who was still legally married to Prince Andrew at the time), was snapped having her toes sucked by US financial adviser, John Bryan.

But even on her hens night, royal bride-to-be Sarah Ferguson proved she was something of party animal when she and Princess Diana donned grey wigs, dressed up as policewomen and pretended to arrest a ‘prostitute’ outside Buckingham Palace. The police let them go when one officer recognised Diana- imagine explaining that to the Queen!

We would’ve loved to have joined Fergie on her hen’s night!

Prince Harry

Before he was a loving and devoted husband and father, Prince Harry couldn’t help but find himself in the tabloids.

Nicknamed “the party prince”, Harry hit headlines in 2012 when he was photographed au natural whilst playing a game of strip billiards in a Las Vegas hotel room.

“It was probably a classic case of me being too much Army and not enough prince,” he said in an interview with Man of the World magazine. “It’s a simple case of that.”

Whilst William was the good boy, Harry was often caught in compromising positions.

Princess Diana

The late Princess of Wales famously said that she wasn’t one to follow the royal rule book and that she led “from the heart, not the head.”

Princess Diana not only chose to re-write her wedding vows and ensure her sons had a more down-to-earth upbringing, but she also knew how to make a statement when it came to fashion.

In 1994, while a documentary about Prince Charles’ infidelity was airing, Princess Diana arrived at a Serpentine Gallery benefit in what was dubbed the ultimate “revenge dress” that accentuated her figure and most certainly stole the show.

Actor Cleo Rocos also confessed in his book that the princess joined him, Queen’s Freddie Mercury, and comedian Kenny Everett for a night on the town disguised in sunglasses, a cap, and an army jacket.

Who could forget that iconic revenge dress?

Mike Tindall

Mike and Zara Tindall live relatively low-key lives now that they’re parents of two, but as a former rugby star, Mike has been to his fair share of wild nights out.

During the 2011 Rugby World Cup, Princess Anne’s son-in-law and his rugby buddies were caught taking part in a boozy “dwarf-tossing contest”. To make matters worse, Mike was also caught smooching his ex and lied to England Rugby Union officials about the encounter and was subsequently fined $45,000.

He may be one of the Queen’s favourites, but Mike had quite the colourful past.

Princess Sofia of Sweden

When Prince Carl Philip of Sweden broke up with his partner of 10 years and started dating Sofia Hellqvist, eyebrows were well and truly raised.

As a former glamour model and reality star, Sofia didn’t sound like your typical royal and appeared in the 2005 dating show Paradise Hotel as well as some racy photo shoots for men’s magazines.

Prince Albert of Monaco

He may have settled down now but before he married and had children, Prince Albert was one notorious playboy.

The son of Prince Rainier III and American actress Grace Kelly was one of the world’s most eligible playboys linked to superstars including Naomi Campbell and even Kylie Minogue.

Even after his engagement to wife Princess Charlene was announced, there was chatter that Albert had fathered a third illegitimate child and that the former Olympian bride was getting cold feet. The couple are still married and are parents to twins Princess Gabriella Therese Marie and Prince Jacques Honore Rainier.
