King Charles III officially proclaimed Head of State in Australia following poignant ceremony

King Charles III has officially been named sovereign of Australia by Governor-General David Hurley in a proclamation ceremony.

After an Acknowledgement of Country, David Hurley addressed the crowd to proclaim the new king before a 21 gun salute.

“Whereas because of the death of our pleasant and glorious Queen Elizabeth II, the Crown has solely and rightfully come to Prince Charles Philip Arthur George,” the Governor-General began his speech.

“We therefore, the honourable David Hurley, Governor General of the Commonwealth of Australia and members of the Federal executive Council do now proclaim Prince Charles Philip Arthur George to be King Charles III by Grace of God…

“And with hearty and humble affection we promise him faith and faithfulness. This 11th day of September, 2022, into the first year of his Majesty’s reign, signed by me as Governor-General and countersigned by my command by the honourable Anthony Albanese MP, Prime Minister of the Commonwealth of Australia.

“God save the King.”

“With hearty and humble affection we promise him faith and faithfulness.”

This was followed by a 21 gun salute and the British National Anthem.

The ceremony officially means that King Charles III is now Australia’s head of state.

The last time a proclamation ceremony occurred was in 1952 at the beginning of Queen Elizabeth’s II reign.

Anthony Albanese recommended to the Governor-General that he perform this ceremony.

A similar ceremony was held in in the UK last night at St James’ Palace which officially recognised Charles as the new sovereign.

This morning it was also announced there will be a one-off public holiday for a national day of mourning on Thursday 22nd Septmber.

Prime Minister Albanese and Governor-General Hurley will be headed for the UK next Thursday to attend The Queen’s funeral.
