Meghan Markle and Prince Harry both have impressive contact books and count many A-list stars among some of their best friends, so we expect to hear an announcement in the coming days and weeks about exactly which high profile mates of the Sussex’s will be the royal baby’s godparents.

Baby Sussex’s christening is expected to be held in about three month’s time – and that’s where we’ll find out exactly who his godparents will be.

Until then, we’ve narrowed down Harry and Meghan’s long list of celeb pals – they did invite 600 people to their wedding, after all! – to a shortlist of those who could be chosen as the special loved ones in Baby Sussex’s life.

Jessica Mulroney

The Canadian stylist and fashion entrepreneur first met Meghan in Toronto, when the Los Angeles native relocated to the city to film the hit TV show Suits, and now the Duchess counts the well-connected Mulroney as one of her closest friends.

Jessica, 39, was Meghan’s “unofficial” maid-of-honour at her royal wedding in May 2018, while her adorable children were page boys and flower girls, and she has accompanied the Duke and Duchess of Sussex on official royal engagements, including the 2017 Invictus Games closing ceremony and their tour of Australia late last year.

Her husband Ben Mulroney is the son of former Canadian Prime Minister Brian Mulroney. Ben is a popular TV host and entertainment reporter, often referred to as the “Canadian Ryan Seacrest.”

But despite their public-facing jobs, Jessica and Meghan keep their friendship incredibly private – and Jess refuses to talk about her bestie in interviews.

“Every person has to have a bit of privacy in their life. There are certain things I hold very dear and secret,” Jessica recently told Harper’s Bazaar when asked about her friendship with the Duchess.

It’s this kind of loyalty that the royals need in their close friendships – and means Baby Sussex could develop a close connection with the Mulroney kids – twins John and Brian and daughter Ivy.

Serena Williams

The tennis superstar is a dear friend of Meghan’s, and with a young daughter of her own, Serena could be exactly the kind of strong, female figure a young boy like Baby Sussex could use in his life.

Serena and Meghan met several years ago and have remained close, with Meghan regularly sitting courtside at Serena’s tennis matches, supporting her friend.

She famously attended Serena’s Wimbledon 2018 final with Kate Middleton in their first solo outing together, and Serena was there with husband Alexis Ohanian on Meghan’s wedding day at Windsor Castle.

Daniel Martin

Every modern baby needs a fabulous “Guncle” – a Gay Uncle – and acclaimed makeup artist Daniel Martin would very well be that positive force in Baby Sussex’s life.

Daniel is one of Meghan’s favourite makeup artists – he did her makeup for her wedding to Prince Harry – and he’s travelled with her on official royal engagements overseas.

The pair have known each other for about 10 years and regularly catch up at Meghan’s new home at Frogmore Cottage.

In fact, Daniel has previously shared photos on Instagram of his time with Meghan, including a recent occasion where the pair tucked into avocado toast and tea. Too cute.

Following the announcements of Baby Sussex’s arrival on Instagram, Daniel posted a gorgeous tribute to his good friend’s new son, reposting the official post made from the @sussexroyal account, accompanied with this cute caption: “#regram Proud #guncle 💙🙌🏼”.

We hope this means we’ll see more intimate snaps from inside Frogmore in the future!

The Clooneys

Human rights lawyer Amal Clooney and her actor husband George have long been friends with the couple, who move in similar social circles.

The Clooneys absolutely slayed their fashion looks at Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan’s wedding last May and the royals have even holidayed at the couple’s beautiful property in Lake Como, Italy.

Amal was also front-and-centre at Meghan’s extravagant baby shower in New York City – she and Serena Williams reportedly picked up the massive tab – and she even flew the Duchess back to the UK on her own private plane.

Plus, Amal and George have two adorable twins of their own, so it would make total sense that these celeb besties would be godparents to Baby Sussex, right?

Well, sadly George himself has put those rumours to bed.

“Oh yes, I’ll be godfather of the royals apparently,” he joked at a recent press panel, before shutting down the suggestion.

“No! I’m a father of twins, I have enough sh–t to deal with, literally!”

Case closed.

David Beckham and Victoria Beckham

With close ties to the royal family, will Posh and Becks get the call up? (Image: Getty)

Posh and Becks were two of the most high profile guests at Harry and Meghan’s wedding last year, and with a huge brood of their own, the couple would be a smart pick as godparents of Baby Sussex.

And according to a source who is friends with both Meghan and Victoria, the fashion designer is desperate to be given the coveted role.

“Vic has been spending quite a lot of time with Meghan lately and heard rumours that she may be asked,” the source revealed to NW.

“She absolutely loves having a connection to royalty and it would be the ultimate honour.”

However, Victoria’s husband David could throw a spanner in the works, with the 44-year-old recently in the headlines for all the wrong reasons, after being slapped with a six-month driving ban for using his phone while behind the wheel.

The source had predicted that David’s bad behaviour might prevent the couple from being given the huge responsibility of being Archie’s godparents.

“Victoria is terrified of him making some public mistake in the run-up to the birth,” the source revealed.

“David seems to be attracting a lot of negative headlines lately, like when he described marriage as being ‘hard work’ or he’s been photographed partying with a group of girls.

“Vic is really worried that her and David’s chance of being godparents could be jeopardised if he slips up.”

“She’s told him to step up and act more of a dutiful husband in the public eye to prove they’re the perfect choice. She’s piling on the pressure, but it will be worth it if they can pull this off.”

Lindsay Jill Roth

Lindsay is Meghan’s best friend from university and the Duchess was her maid of honour, so they’re super close.

While it’s true the pair met years before Meghan was famous, Lindsay says despite how much Meghan’s life has changed, that hasn’t changed their relationship at all.

Lindsay says despite time and distance, her and Meghan have always remained good friends.

“We’re the kind of friends who can be 3000 miles away and still be talking about or thinking the same thing, and even texting each other the same thing at the same time miles away,” she told People in 2017.

“I think people assume that when someone gains notoriety that they change,” she said.

“But she’s still the same girl I met years ago, with the same values and priorities. She’s selfless, and that’s just a part of who she is and who she was raised to be.”

It’s common for new parents to pick their oldest and best friends as godparents, so we wouldn’t be surprised to see Lindsay make the cut!

Misha Nonoo

Without Misha Nonoo, we may not have the gorgeous couple that is Harry and Meghan in the first place.

The fashion designer is rumoured to have set up Prince Harry and the then-Meghan Markle on their first blind date – and she has remained one of the Duchess’ closest friends.

Misha was previously a frequent fixture on Meghan’s now-deleted Instagram account, thanks to the many enviable overseas holidays they’ve taken together.

Her ex-husband Alexander Gilkes actually went to school with Prince Harry and Prince William, so the couple have known each other for years.

Wouldn’t it be cute for Baby Sussex’s godmother to be the woman who introduced his parents? We certainly think so.

Here’s why Kate and William WON’T be godparents

The Fab Four are still bound together for life! (Image: Getty)

If you thought that Prince William and Duchess Catherine were total shoe-ins for the role of godparents to Baby Sussex, you were wrong!

Royal tradition means that siblings never act as godparents, because they will already play a significant role in the child’s life.

Those roles are always reserved for close personal friends of the parents.

So despite rumours of a feud between Prince Harry and Prince William, and a string of negative news stories about “hurricane Meghan”, that isn’t to blame for the Cambridges missing out on godparent duties.

The same thing happened with Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis – Prince Harry is not a godparent to any of the Cambridge children, and neither are Kate’s siblings Pippa and James Middleton.
