With season five of The Crown right released in 2022, royal fans saw a fictionalised and dramatised account of the divorce of Prince Charles and Princess Diana.
But as production for season six continues, the Netflix hit has confirmed that one royal moment will not be shown in the series.
The Crown will not portray Princess Diana’s tragic death in a car accident.
“The exact moment of the crash impact will not be shown,” Netflix confirmed in a statement to The Sun.
A source previously revealed to Deadline that the show’s sixth instalment would portray before and after the crash.
“It’s the run-up: the car leaving The Ritz after midnight with paparazzi in pursuit and then the aftermath with the British Ambassador to France swinging into action with the Foreign Office and then the subsequent constitutional aftermath,” they said.
The crash occurred on August 31st in 1997. Diana and her boyfriend at the time, Dodi Al Fayed, were pursed by paparazzi while travelling to Paris and eventually crashed into part of a tunnel. Al Fayed died on impact while Diana died in hospital at 36 years’ old.
Since filming on the new season wrapped, fury has erupted after images of a replica of the smashed car that Diana died in emerged.
The images in question show the car completely destroyed with the bonnet crushed and the dashboard out of the windscreen.
And despite confirming that the horrifying (and heartbreaking) crash would not be shown, reports have also surfaced that the actress who plays Diana, Elizabeth Debicki, has been made to lie in an open coffin and pretend to be dead in shocking scenes that are presumably from her characters funeral.
And in another shocking scene, medics who tried to save her are seen in a blood drenched hospital theatre.
Horrified onlookers told The Sun that they hope public fury will force network executives to axe the ”distressing” scenes.
One said: ”They actually made Elizabeth climb into a coffin and play dead as Diana. Viewers will see a French priest administering the last rites for Diana as she is pronounced deceased.”
Another noted that the scenes filmed were ”obsence” and ”should be banned” from broadcast.
”They hired real surgeons for the scenes [in the hospital]. Nurses are also seen around the lifeless body. There is blood everywhere – on the surgeons’ gowns and gloves, and on the door.
”Cast members were visibly upset at what they were being asked to do.”
While the show’s first season ended in 1955, Crown fans have been taken to the early 1990s with the latest season which was released in November 2022.
It detailed the late Queen’s “annus horribilis” of 1992, which saw several of her children’s marriages fall apart and Windsor Castle partially destroyed by fire.
In the new season, the Queen was portrayed by Imelda Staunton, who you may recognise as Professor Umbridge in the Harry Potter series.
Meanwhile, Welsh actor Jonathan Pryce portrayed the late Prince Philip, Dominic West played Prince Charles, and Lesley Manville played Princess Margaret.
It will be hard to top Emma Corrin’s portrayal of Princess Diana in season four, but Australian actress Elizabeth Debicki is filling her shoes.
As for Charles’ wife Camilla Parker-Bowles, that role has been filled by British star Olivia Williams.
