Princess Charlotte paid tribute to her great-grandmother the Queen at her funeral on Monday by donning a very sentimental brooch.

The brooch, which is in the shape of a horseshoe, holds great significance as it represents the late monarch’s love for all things equestrian.

Queen Elizabeth II had a lifelong passion for horses, having had her first riding lesson at age three, and was often spotted on horseback over the years.

Princess Charlotte, seven, has inherited her great-grandmother’s penchant for horses, and has also learnt to ride already.

In 2018, Paralympic Equestrian Natasha Baker said Kate Middleton told her that Charlotte is “really enjoying riding”.

“She emphasised that Charlotte has this passion for horses and although she doesn’t echo it, she’ll do her best to champion and encourage it,” Natasha said.

Prince George also attended the funeral.

Other members of the British Royal Family also share the late Queen’s passion for horses, and have paid homage to it throughout the past 10 days of mourning events.

Over the weekend, when the Queen’s eight grandchildren stood vigil at her coffin, her granddaughter Lady Louise Windsor wore a necklace with the silhouette of a horse head.

At Monday’s sombre funeral, Charlotte and her brother Prince George, nine, were dressed in matching black outfits as they arrived at Westminster Abbey to farewell their great-grandmother.

Royal watchers had been waiting for the children to make an appearance after the Queen’s sudden death on September 8, with rumours they would appear as her coffin was taken from Balmoral last week.

However the Prince and Princess of Wales, who have always been strict about their children’s privacy, chose to shield them from the spotlight in the wake of their great-grandmother’s death until now.

It was only confirmed on Monday that George and Charlotte would attend the funeral and mother Princess Catherine cut a protective figure as she escorted them into Westminster Abbey.
