On Friday, December 20, the Duke of Edinburgh was admitted to King Edward VII Hospital in London, with Buckingham Palace releasing a statement on the royal’s health.

“The Duke of Edinburgh travelled from Norfolk this morning to the King Edward VII Hospital in London for observation and treatment in relation to a pre-existing condition,” the statement read.

“The admission is a precautionary measure, on the advice of His Royal Highness’ Doctor.”

The statement cleared up initial panic for the 98-year-old, who formally retired from his royal duties back in 2017.

Now, it has been confirmed the Duke has spent a second night in hospital, and it is unclear as to whether the Prince will join the other royals for Christmas as Sandringham this year, as per tradition.

While little more is known about why the Duke has been admitted to hospital, a source revealed to PEOPLE that Philip pre-planned his admission.

“It was a planned admission, and he walked into the hospital unaided,” the source said.

And it hasn’t seemed to encumber the Queen’s Christmas plans – she was spotted arriving at church in Sandringham over the weekend as expected.

The 93-year-old Monarch was dressed in a beautiful emerald ensemble for the occasion.

She was pictured with her daughter-in-law Sophie, Countess of Wessex, who wore a trendy brown wide-brimmed hat and a cream coat.

While it’s part and parcel for royals to attend Christmas church services if they are around for them, this wouldn’t be the first time Philip has missed a traditional royal outing.

At Easter last year, the Duke was no where to be seen as other key members of the royal family attended church at Windsor.

At the time, it was revealed the Duke had undergone hip replacement surgery.

Other health issues have plagued the Prince in recent times, often forcing him to cancel scheduled appearances.

But it’s still all-systems go for the royals, who have been sharing some sweet insights into their festive activities this week.

Over the weekend, the Palace dropped three beautiful new images of The Queen and her three heirs for a very special reason.

In the stunning professional shots, she, her son Prince Charles, Prince William and even six-year-old Prince George were seen making Christmas puddings for the launch of The Royal British Legion’s ‘Together at Christmas’ initiative.

The inspiring campaign has been designed to provide support to Armed forces and veteran communities.
