Princess Diana‘s former butler and best friend Paul Burrell has spoken out about her son Prince Harry’s engagement to American actress Meghan Markle.
The world flew into a frenzy yesterday when the announcement was made. Photos of their engagement emerged, and it was clear to see on their faces that they absolutely adored each other.
Paul Burrell, who was a close confidante of the late Princess Diana, spoke to UK TV show Lorraine earlier today about how overjoyed she would have been about her son’s engagement (you can watch at the top).
The 57-year-old, who married his partner Graham Cooper earlier this year, compared Prince Harry and Meghan’s video announcement to that of his “stilted” parents, saying: “Clearly, this is love.”
The former butler said: “They adore each other and it’s a lovely, lovely thing to watch unfold.”
With his insight of the royal family, Paul warned: “It’s not going to be easy for them. Who’d have thought an American, divorcee, Catholic would have married a Prince of the United Kingdom?”
But the former I’m A Celeb! contestant had nothing but fond things to say about the couple, noticing some similarities between Meghan and Princess Diana.
He said: “She’s 36 isn’t she? A mature young woman. Have you considered the fact that she’s 36 years old? Exactly the same age Princess Diana was when she died.
“She’s a mature young woman who knows her own mind. She knows her way forward.”

Paul moved onto Diana’s diamond collection, which Harry has taken from to create Meghan’s engagement ring.
He said: “William must have said to Harry, ‘What would you like to give to Meghan? Something of Mummy’s, because that’s right and that’s what Mummy would want.’
“And that’s true. She would. That ring on Meghan’s finger will always remind her of the legacy which she’s married into.”
Well, we’re not sure she’s going to forget it in a hurry!
Paul also added that he thought Meghan would become close friends with Harry’s brother William’s wife, Kate Middleton.
He said: “I think they’ll be as thick as thieves.”
How wonderful! Congratulations to Harry and Meghan!
