The former rugby players’ appearance on the show did come as a surprise, given Tindall is married to Zara, beloved granddaughter of the late Queen Elizabeth II.

Even more surprising, is how much Mike has spilled about his family on the show. And in a twist no one saw coming, Zara has even made a virtual appearance to support her husband.

This week, Mike became teary – eyed when he heard a message of support from his wife of 11 years.

”Hi my love. We are missing you so much and really needing some Papa hugs, but glad you’re sharing them with your campmates,” one of Mike’s fellow contestants read, as the competitors received letters from loved ones,” Zara said.

”The girls are enjoying sports and throwing themselves into everything at the moment, and the little man is loving life, smashing it up, learning some new words,” she continued, the letter signed ”Z, M, L and L. x.”

”It was amazing to hear from Zara and the kids,” Mike said during a sit down interview, filmed separately, where the camera panned back to footage of him wiping his eye.

”Of course, it just makes you want to see them more, but you never know when that might be,” he added.

Since marrying Zara in 2011 in a star studded event that saw the loved up pair enjoy a reception on the Royal Yacht Britannia, Mike and Zara, both 41, have become parents to daughters Mia, 8 and Lena, 4, and son Lucas, 1.

Mike has currently been away from home for two weeks to compete on the reality program, which takes contestants out of their usual routines and into campsites surrounded by insects, the elements and the dangers of nature. This year, the season is being filmed in Queensland, Australia.

With just a week to go, remaining contestants’ friends and family usually get off to the set to support their loved ones, but Mikes’ family is a notable absence.

Now to Love believes it is highly likely that given three young children in the mix, the international trip would be ”too disruptive” for the family.

Zara however may decide yet to travel to Australia alone nearer the time of the final.

Speaking of his wife’s reaction to him taking part in the show, Mike said Zara was ”surprisingly supportive”.

”Zara gets it and supports it. With both our careers, she goes away competing for weeks at a time and I always went on tours for three, four weeks in the summer, so our relationship has always been built to deal with that and we’re good at compartmentalizing and finding ways to deal with it.”
