Prince Harry and Meghan Markle wed in May 2018 and Meghan looked absolutely stunning in a custom Givenchy gown, hand-embroidered veil and Queen Mary’s bandeau tiara, which was lent to her by the late Queen Elizabeth II.
But apparently, Meghan originally wanted to wear a different tiara on her wedding day; a request the Queen allegedly denied.
According to Battle of Brothers: William & Harry, a book written by royal historian Robert Lacey, Meghan asked to wear an emerald and diamond tiara of Russian origin.
However, the Duchess of Sussex‘s choice was rebuffed by Queen Elizabeth because the tiara was fraught with scandal.
“Unconfirmed by the palace – but not denied – we were told that the Queen felt that she had to say ‘no’ to Meghan’s first choice, a beautiful emerald headdress that was said to have come from Russia.”
“This was code for a sensitive origin, meaning that the treasure was one of those that had found its way into Windsor hands through ‘undefined,’ not to say dodgy channels – and for an undisclosed price – in the aftermath of the Russian Revolution,” Lacey’s book reads.
Further explaining why Queen Elizabeth reportedly vetoed Meghan from wearing the Russian tiara, a royal insider is quoted in Lacey’s book as saying, “There was scandal attached to it. For this reason, the emerald tiara was seldom, if ever, put on public display.”
“It would suit neither the palace nor Meghan herself that spring if newspapers started speculating about which Tsarist princess had worn the tiara and how she had been assassinated,” the insider said.

Lacey’s book also claims that when Prince Harry found out his grandmother wouldn’t let his wife-to-be borrow the tiara she initially wanted, he “flew into a rage”.
“Unfortunately, Harry’s ignorance of both history and family tradition meant that he had no understanding of this subtlety,” Lacey wrote.
Clearly, if this all did happen, it’s water under the bridge though, as Meghan recently divulged how she really felt about her late grandmother-in-law to Variety and had nothing but nice things to say.
“I feel deep gratitude to have been able to spend time with her and get to know her.”
“I’ve reflected on that first official engagement that I had with her, how special that felt. I feel fortunate. And I continue to be proud to have had a nice warmth with the matriarch of the family,” Meghan said.
