As she embarked on her new life as a royal after marrying Prince Harry, there was one big thing Meghan Markle was required to give up – her Instagram account.
It’s a fate no millennial would take pleasure in hearing, especially when you consider the amount of colourful content, constant news updates and inspiration the platform provides.
For Meghan, we’re pretty sure she saw the platform no differently.
With a feed filled with candid snaps of food, travel and some good old fashioned selfies, there’s no doubt the newly minted Duchess would have felt at least a little pang of sadness as she hit ‘delete’.
But now, it seems the Duchess has found a loophole in the strict royal protocol surrounding social media – and while we’re not expecting selfies or cute puppy snaps anytime soon, it’s exciting enough to think that Meghan is utilising her savvy online skills in all their glory once again.
Enter @SussexRoyal, the Duke and Duchess’ brand new Instagram account launched earlier this month.
The unprecedented move was a big step for the soon-to-be parents as they mark their own social territory away from their former official account, @KensingtonRoyal, which was shared with Prince William and Duchess Catherine.
And already, the account has been awash with vibrant posts detailing the work the Duke and Duchess are doing.

Who runs the royals’ social media accounts?
Up until now, it’s been understood that each post is shared by the Palace’s nifty PR team on behalf of the royals, with any direct quotes from said Dukes, Duchesses and assorted regal-dignitaries clearly pinpointed within the captions.
But there’s one thing we just can’t shake when it comes to the brand new Sussex Royal account – the style and tone of each post has a very familiar ring to it, and it could have everything to do with Meghan.
Indeed fans are now convinced that it’s Meghan Markle herself who is behind all of the detailed new posts released by the official royal account.
And it’s not without any evidence – in fact, there’s a ton of clues that have suggested Meghan is tapping and scrolling away on her smartphone as she embraces the life all millennials are accustomed to.
So without further ado, we’ve deep dived into the account itself to pin point all the signs that suggests Meghan is behind @SussexRoyal.
Keep scrolling as we investigate this very pertinent topic.
The wording
Let’s be honest, grammar can get the best of us sometimes – especially when it comes to perfecting the art of UK spelling over US spelling.
And that’s where the @SussexRoyal Instagram account and us are very similar.
In one post, the word ‘re-energised’ was used, but instead of using the letter ‘s’ as is correct in UK spelling, a ‘z’ replaced it.
With her Californian roots well known to Meghan’s fans across the world, it does make us think the Duchess had a hand in writing the caption.
What’s more, common American words which are not often referred to in the UK were also used in a post about donations to charity organisation, Baby2Baby.
The post read: “Baby2Baby have received over 5,000 products to disperse to children in need, including cribs, books, backpacks, diapers and have received monetary donations from around the globe – from Guadalajara to Italy.”
Reads relatively normal right? Well, not for everyone, it seems.
The use of the word ‘cribs’ is commonly used in America, but ‘cots’ is the usual reference used in the UK. Similarly, referencing a ‘backpack’ instead of a ‘rucksack’ is also very US.
And one more – even us Aussies know that the word ‘diapers’ is very American. Nappies is much more like it…
The plot thickens!
The use of emojis
It’s common knowledge that emojis are very much a thing of our generation – so when one of the oldest institutions in the UK start using them, you know we’ve come a very long way.
And that’s exactly why we think Meghan is behind her royal Instagram account.
In one such post, a camera emoji was used to credit a photographer from one of the pictures posted – how very nifty of the British royals!

The use of the dollar sign
This one’s a no-brainer.
In a post referencing donations given to various organisations around the world in leiu of sending gifts direct to the royals before they welcome Baby Sussex, the caption reads: “Whether a $5 donation, £1000 contribution, offering to volunteer, or spreading the word – you’ve played your part”
Using American currency as well as UK currency is a sure sign there’s an understanding American behind these messages – and we’re willing to hedge our bets on a certain brunette Duchess….
The overall tone
There’s no denying Meghan is a passionate person and has a warm and encouraging tone when she’s addressing things that are close to her heart.
That’s why the royal’s baby gift donations post was all the more telling.
Within the post, it read: “Their Royal Highnesses wanted you to know the impact of your support – the direct effect your donation, energy, and action made! YOU chose to be part of the collective good, and you have made a real difference.”
Using the capitalised word ‘YOU’ is very expressive, especially for a royal account – but it’s definitely something we could see Meghan having a hand in writing.
The post also ends with a very poignant and emotive line: “You made this happen. Thank you.”
Direct and emotive – this has Meghan written all over it!
Stay tuned as we continue to follow (and, let’s be honest, stalk on a daily basis) the Sussexes Instagram account – we’re pretty sure we’re in for plenty more unprecedented royal revelations on their new social media channel.
