Queen Elizabeth II reportedly wanted her daughter-in-law to guide Meghan Markle as she stepped into the British royal family, but the then-actress rejected the offer.
Prior to marrying Prince Harry in 2018, the former monarch hoped Meghan would be shown “the ropes” by Sophie, the Countess of Wessex who both came from similar backgrounds – otherwise known as non-royals.
The book Elizabeth: An Intimate Portrait by Gyles Brandreth – who is a friend of the royal family – made the allegations.
“The Queen (who, of course, had seen it all before) understood that Harry’s girl might find adjusting to royal life ‘challenging to begin with’ (as she put it),” Gyles wrote.
“‘It is very jolty, but you soon get used to it’ – that was Her Majesty’s experience going back many years.”
“To help Meghan, the Queen suggested that her daughter-in-law, Sophie Wessex, would be an ideal mentor.” Gyles then further commented the Queen allegedly said: “Sophie can help show you the ropes.”
However, the author wrote that Meghan made it very clear that she did not need help as “she had Harry.”
The duchess reportedly also rejected advice from Camilla, Queen Consort – who was the Duchess of Cornwall at the time. Despite Camilla’s best efforts to welcome Meghan into the family, she remained uninterested, Angela Levin told 9Honey.
Despite Meghan’s confidence, Her Majesty remained concerned according to Gyles.
The American actress reportedly revealed to the Queen that she was dedicated to performing her new royal responsibilities full-time in which made the monarch “particularly delighted.”
Concern arose once again when news spread that Meghan was allegedly “a bit ‘high-handed’ with staff” which was assumed to be a result of “pre-wedding nerves.”
The “bullying” claims were initially reported by The Sun in which a book, The New Royals by Katie Nicholl alleged Meghan ranted to a caterer about the vegan wedding menu. The Duchess of Sussex denied the allegations.
But since departing the royal family, Meghan has made her own claims that she had been bullied.
The Queen’s relationship with Meghan was murky from the beginning as the former monarch told her soon to be granddaughter-in-law to continue being an actress: “That’s your profession, after all.”
