Meghan Markle and Prince Harry join the royal family at the Royal Ascot

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have attended the first day of Royal Ascot, joining Queen Elizabeth II and several other members of the royal family for the annual horse racing event.

All eyes were on newlyweds Prince Harry, 33, and Meghan Markle, 36, who stole the show in an elegant cream and black ensemble by her wedding dress designer, Givenchy. Somewhat controversially, the new royal decided to forgo wearing a name tag, a requirement for the royal family, possibly due to her dress’ delicate fabric.

The couple, who were coincidentally marking their one-month wedding anniversary looked completely in love as they enjoyed the prestigious UK equestrian event.

The Royal Ascot, is a highlight in the royal calendar, and a favourite social event for horse-racing aficionado, The Queen.

Her Majesty appeared in good spirits as she arrived in a carriage smiling broadly, alongside Princess Anne, who just welcomed a new grandchild that morning. The monarch wore a sunny yellow heightened by splashes of sky blue, while her daughter looked demure in cream.

In keeping with Ascot tradition, the the royal family travel down the straight in front of the stands at exactly 2pm every day of Royal Ascot. On day one, Harry and Meghan took their seats in their own carriage, while Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie, and Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall, were also among the royal party.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were absent from the event this year.

The royals mingle on the green.

While it was a joy for royal watchers to see the royal family out-and-about, it was the family’s newest addition, Meghan, who was the centre of attention. Meghan and Harry were in fits of laughter as they presented a trophy to jockey Frankie Dettori, who rode to victory on horse Without Parole in the St James’s Palace Stakes.

The Italian jockey was delighted to receive his trophy from the Duchess. When he told Meghan his son would be “very pleased” when he learned who presented his father the cup, he said Meghan “kind of giggled”.

The cheeky jockey even stole a kiss from Meghan, planting a smooch on her hand, while I laughing Harry was seen wagging his finger at the star jockey.
