Meghan Markle is known to be a fierce advocate for social causes, and her latest impassioned plea is mixing her desire to do good with another great love of hers – dogs.

A letter written by the determined new mum has emerged detailing her personal connection to a cause close to her heart, and it’s provided an incredible insight into her character.

While we always knew Meghan was a great dog lover (she was a proud owner of several rescue dogs!), it’s become clear exactly how she came to love the furry four-legged fellows, and we couldn’t be cheering her on more.

In a letter written for animal welfare charity Mayhew, of which Meghan became a patron for at the start of 2019, the Duchess has shared a forward detailing her personal connection to pets, and why she supports the charity’s work.

“As a proud rescue dog owner, I know from personal experience the joy that adopting an animal into your home can bring,” she wrote in the letter.

“The role that we, as people, play in rehoming and rescuing these animals is vital, but the role of organisations such as Mayhew is unparalleled.”

Meghan then detailed why she respects Mayhew’s work in particular, mentioning their community-based approach as one that sets it apart.

“[It’s] not simply [about] rehoming animals, but in the preventative care that inhibits these cats and dogs from ending up in shelters in the first place,” she explained.

Describing their education programs as well as their community work with the elderly, homeless and vulnerable communities, she added: “[Mayhew] actively seek solutions that allow people to stay with their animals and have the support they need to do so.”

The Duchess of Sussex has owned several pups herself in the past.

Meghan stressed that owning a pet is a big responsibility, and a decision that should not be taken lightly. But that being said, she said the decision will “undoubtedly change your life.”

“As Patron of Mayhew, I encourage you to get involved in whatever way you can—either through pet adoption, volunteering, donation, or spreading the word,” she concluded.

“We are all interconnected and through these animals we find an even greater link to community and the part we can play.”

We can’t help but applaud the Duchess for her practical advice and passion for a cause that is clearly very close to her heart.

Meghan and Harry own a pup themselves, believed to be named Oz, who they welcomed into their home in 2018.

We can only imagine how much fun the pooch is having with a brand new baby on the scene – although we hope he’s playing very gentle with Archie!

Meghan also owns a rescue beagle named Guy, and also owned another pupper named Bogart when she lived in Toronto.

Due to poor old Bogart’s old age, he wasn’t able to make the move over to the UK with Meghan, but we’re sure he’s now housed in a very nice new home!

It would be safe to assume Meghan is a dog-person!
