A shock report has rocked Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York, just as she was re-establishing herself with the royal family. It’s been recently revealed that Fergie was detained and thrown into a police car outside of Buckingham Palace.

The decidedly unroyal behaviour has been documented by a leading royal biographer, who claims the duchess, 59, was not alone during her run-in with the law, and was joined by none other than Princess Diana.

The alleged incident, which happened on the night of Fergie’s hens party before she married Prince Andrew in 1986, started out as a prank, but turned sour when the mischievous royals took their joke too far.

Sarah Bradford, also known as Viscountess Bangor, revealed, “There was always trouble afoot when the two women got together.

“She’s got this familiar feeling of shame creeping in” a royal insider said of Fergie on her arrest making the media rounds again.

“On Fergie’s hen night she and Diana wore grey wigs, dressed up as policewomen and pretended to arrest a ‘prostitute’ outside Buckingham Palace. They were put in a police van and driven down The Mall until one of the policemen recognised Diana. He was so shocked he couldn’t believe it.”

The women were let go, but not deterred by their embarrassing escapade.

The viscountess claims Fergie and Diana hit up a nightclub before using their disguises once again – this time to cause mayhem for Sarah’s soon-to-be husband Prince Andrew.

“They then succeeded in tricking the policemen on the gates of Buckingham Palace and they shut the gates in Andrew’s face as his car approached,” she added. “Fearing an ambush, he screeched into reverse… That’s when Fergie wondered if she’d gone too far.”

Even if she was able to laugh off the incident – although impersonating a police officer is a punishable offense – royal sources tell Woman’s Day Fergie is mortified that her wild indiscretion was last week making the rounds in the British press once again.

Royal Outcast

“This is a huge blow to Fergie, who was finally feeling respected and welcomed back into the Windsor clan. Now she’s got this familiar feeling of shame and embarrassment creeping back in,” says one royal insider.

“It doesn’t matter that it was such a long time ago, because Sarah knows this will not sit well with the Queen, and it’s just a stark reminder of the Fergie of old – the Fergie a lot of people were hoping to leave in the past.”

Fergie, mother of Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie, has certainly had a history of mishaps and was, for quite some time, regarded as a royal outcast.

The sisters-in-law, who saw themselves as outsiders, shared a close bond.

From the humiliating end to her marriage to Andrew in 1996 when she was photographed topless and sucking the toes of her financial adviser, to fallouts with royal relatives and even an eye-rolling reality TV series, Fergie hasn’t exactly followed royal protocol.

However, in recent months Fergie has been determined to be seen as a positive role model – and until now it’s been working.

“Fergie is now panicking about any other incidents that could come back to bite her in the backside,” adds the insider.

“If this had come to light a few years ago she would have just brushed it under the carpet and ignored it. But now it could shatter all the hard work she’s put into rebuilding her reputation with the royal family.”
